Hint: They were European; but, obviously, not French.

As far as I know there were not too many U.S.A citizens on that 2nd Fre French Armoured Division.

Anyway, if they were; well, I do not know how they might be considered as EUROPEANS. :P

No, they were not American soldiers.

Troops in Paris

Post by charles adams » 12 Mar 2005 08:05

The only reason I thought of US is because an Amei Inf Div was on the outskirts and was told to stop awaiting the arrival of the French troops. American recon patrols had been inside Paris, how far I don't know and as officialy it didn't happen I doubt we will ever really know.
By the time that the French got to the outskirts a US AD was also on the outskirts. They waited until the French OFFICIALY entered the city and marched through the city and out the otherside straight into a firefight

Corsicans...no, but we are getting closer. Southern Europe.

Those men were veterans of an already fought (and lost war). Not having a free country to go back, they lived in France as refugees, before joining the French army in de movilization of 1939.

Given the nationality of the poster I would guess they weren't just veterans of the Spanish Civil War but more exactly Basque veterans. Many of them were forced to flee Spain after the nationalist victory and they probably settled in France.
Am I right?
