Re: Wanted: German MG armour, WWI
Good day Mark,
thanks for interesting photos from you, like always, excellent!
One question for sure allowed, I was aware about the large "Schutzschild" against enemy fire, snipers, etc.
But what was the purpose for the smaller armor sets/shields, mounted on the models 08 and 08/15..?
In the front of the barrel there was something like a solid "Prallblech" under the barrel, to lead "incoming bullets" out of the way,
and into another direction...
The PDF book "Helmets and Body Armor in Modern Warfare" from the year 1920 for sure very interesting for you.
The PDF version of the book is 348 pages strong, the downlad size of the file is almost 20 MB large, very interesting!
Probably downloaded from the website archive.org...?
(Too long ago, I do not remember, sorry)
Kind regards from Hans1906

Re: Wanted: German MG armour, WWI
Hans1906 sorry for the delay. Just seen your message. Thanks for the information I will try and find it.
I am not aware of any armour for the MG08/15. It was designed as a 'light' machine gun so any armour protection would defeat the purpose. The picture above Armour8 shows the single front armoured plate - is this what you mean? Or do you mean larger types of shields to fit onto the schlitten? Or the inner armoured plate that was often removed by the crew?
Again sorry for the delay.

Re: Wanted: German MG armour, WWI
Thanks Bill for the armour image. That was a standard sniper plate as used for trench or fire position protection. Very similar though - thanks. Mark
