Alternatively, you try hand beating out these panels one at a time for 30 prototypes and get them all exactly the same ;) Ok, only joking, but that aside, these were not stamped or pressed steel panels on this series of cars, they were hand built prototype vehicles. You've actually picked on a car which, to the KdF affecionados, is well known as having an out of symmetry W shaped rear lid. Car no 6. [hence 43006]. Actually this very car was found a short while ago in Lithuania after a long and misused life and has had a fortune spent on restoring it to its original 1938 condition, and this includes restoration of the decklid, which is still not symmetrical, and I believe helped them clue in to which car it was :)

If you're really interested in the early cars I recommend this thread:

If not, skip to the last page for some fab photos of the restored car.

Matt

Incidentally, those are lovely pictures of that wartime KdF wagen 43019, which shows Herbert Kaes and his family.
Here he is driving one of the earlier Type 60 prototypes. I seem to recall one of the Porsche firm testers was given or bought one of these, so it might well have been Kaes but I can't remember which book I read it in at the moment.

Thanks Matt, I hadn't thought of hand crafting instead of stamping out panels.

There are many photos of Beetle in the book; Volkswagen Militarfahrzeuge 1938-1948 by Dr. Hans-Georg Mayer-Stein. It's a fairly new book (1999) so I am reluctant to post images from it.

Thanks. There is a few nice early pictures in "The Original VW Beetle" published by Haynes, of an early car, and of course the thread I linked has a lot but a lot of pages to flip through! I have not seen the book you mention but shall have a look out in the library. There is a book recently done by Chris Barber which is supposed to be excellent but I have not seen it either, yet.
Regards
Matt

Another nickname for the "Käfer" is "Kugelporsche" (Bowl- or Bullettporsche). Since I saw the picture above, I know why.

Looks like the burned Hebmuller factory. Note the longer decklids since they are 2 seaters.
