Indeed, Jose.
Note also the difficulty in masking off the headlamps of a Graham due to their "Art Deco" design.
Photo here of a clearer shot of the headlamp design..

I found this today while searching for something else.
Your holzgas car is a Mercedes but I won't guess at the model designation.

Re: Wood gas vehicles: firewood in the fuel tank
Great, Bill! That's it. I wonder if anyone can decipher the sign on the door. All I can make out are the words Berlin and 903. Maybe it was a taxi? But a Mercedes would seem a little fancy for that.
Cheers,
Max

A large woodburner, but the apparatus obscures any identification features which I might recognise, sadly.

Re: Wood gas vehicles: firewood in the fuel tank
Hi Max:
Sorry, not much help but I did find the original photograph on the Bundesarchiv site but all it says is the photo was taken in Berlin in 1946. The registration plate does not match any normal type that I have in my document files for German plates, so it may be a special commercial plate such as a taxi. And, yes.....Mercedes cars were used as taxis both before and after the war.
The 170/190/220 diesel powered taxis were ubiquitous all over Europe at least into the 1980's, the last time I visited there.
I will keep looking.

Re: Wood gas vehicles: firewood in the fuel tank
Hi Max, hi Bill,
first to the identification: I think it is the type 200 long, here a pullman limousine (source of the pic: "Deutsche Autos 1920 - 1945" by Werner Oswald).
Here some information to the number plate: in August 1945, three monthes after the end of the war, the old registration for Berlin with the two letters IA ended. At first the introduction of new license plates took place under the overall control of the Soviet allies. The new number plates got the Cyrillic differentiation license plate "БГ" (= Берлин Город, Berlin city) and a diagonal yellow line running on the license plate. These plates were used until may 1947 in the whole city of Berlin.
Here a pic of such a licens plate.
On the door the two words under unreadable words, that could be the district: here Berlin Steglitz, a part of the city.
Regards
Bert

Re: Wood gas vehicles: firewood in the fuel tank
You are the master, Bert!!!!
I cannot thank you enough for solving the mystery of the registration plate. I completely forgot the Soviets had effective administrative responsibility over all of Berlin even though there were several zones and I completely ignored the possibility of cyrillic letters.
I played around with the photo in Photoshop and I agree the words below the curved words are "Berlin-Steglitz".
I think the words in the curved part are perhaps in Russian but I am not positive. Regarding the model of the Benz, as always I bow to your superior knowledge of the marque.
Thanks again.

Here's a thread covering this topic on a Russian forum (there's also a photo of Sergey Korolyov in Berlin with such "БГ" registration plate).
Glazing at the photo on Wikimedia Commons I decyphered the curved inscription. It is not in Russian, but in English, literally CIVILIAN MOTOR POOL. I'm quite sure someone can add some details about this organisation.
With best regards, Ilya.

Hi Ilya and all:
This is one of the things I enjoy most about this Forum. It is truly International.
A question is posed by a Filipino, partially answered by a Yank, more of the answer is given by a German and a Russian adds the remaining bits of the puzzle.
Thank you Ilya and I have bookmarked the Russian site as they have lots of good information I had not seen before.
I agree with your "translation" of "Civilian Motor Pool". I will look further into that and I know I have seen the term somewhere before.
Totally off subject, but we have very fine weather here today and there are lots of motorcycles out and about.
My upstairs office window overlooks the road passing in front of our house and I just saw a young man on some sort of Japanese bike do a "Wheelie", riding on only the back wheel, for a hundred meters or so. Spring Fever as we call it. All kinds of crazy things happen.
