Re: Wood gas vehicles: firewood in the fuel tank
Thanks for your efforts guys! Yes the words "Civilian Motor Pool Berlin-Steglitz" (in English) look perfectly clear to me now. It's funny how you can solve a puzzle after someone gives you the answer. Also the Cyrillic letters on the plate should have been a clue to but raises another puzzle. If the car was registered in the Russian Zone why was the door sign written in English rather than German or Russian?
To me "Civilian Motor Pool" implies that it was an official conveyance for civil servants of some Military or Government Agency, which might explain its relative luxuriousness compared to the usual modes of transport immediately postwar.
I agree with you, Bill that this forum is a wonderful source of information from knowledgeable people the world over. I learn something new every day. BTW I'm not a Filipino but a Yank engineer who retired to this beautiful country some five years ago.

Hi Max,
really a great effort by a very good cooperation. I´m glad that I could contribute something to find the answers to Your question.
Now to Your last question:
"If the car was registered in the Russian Zone why was the door sign written in English rather than German or Russian?"
In August 1945 all vehicles got the new license number "БГ" in all four zones of the city. From May 1947 there were new license plates, now with the two Latin letters "KB" = Kommandantura Berlin, also for all four zones. From November 1948 until 1953 there were new license plates in East Berlin, the Soviet zone of Berlin with the two letters "GB" = Groß-Berlin (Great Berlin). From 1953 - 1974 there were license plates in the GDR in East Belin "I A". In 1956 in West Berlin new license plates were introduced with the letter "B - + letter(s) + number(s)", still existing till today.
Regards
Bert

Bert,
As I said previously I learn something new here everyday. That's information of which I was totally unaware. I really appreciate the help of you, Bill and Ilya. Are you all familiar with this Russian site concerning German license plates? http://www.autogallery.org.ru/m/nomde.htm

Nice kubelwagen pics, glushenko.
Here is another very interesting military vehicle:
Here is another very interesting military vehicle:
During the German occupation of France in World War II the French Resistance constructed a number of improvised armored vehicles they called La Rochelle. From the French Ministry of Defense come these photographs of what appears to be an improvised armored vehicle with gasifier. Supposedly the turret is plywood, added for indimidation. They’re mugging for the press after the liberation- look at how happy everyone is, they all have big goofy grins on their faces. They’ve taped photographs to the gasifier & scribbled on it with chalk.

Looks like 2 cm Flak 30 or 2 cm Flugabwehrkanone 30. You can just see the gun muzzle peaking in the pic.Maxschnauzer wrote:Nice one, Bert. I wonder what kind of trailer he is towing?

I think you are right J-P. I clearly see a muzzle now, I thought it part of a "mast" on the trailer which now looks more like a pole in the background. Thanks.
