Why is the jacket of the loader of 312 painted in green not black?
Because of this (I guess)..........see the black and white photo below; it was not black (it seems to me).

Was the guy SS?

It's not something I'm any kind of expert on, but while the SS's dress uniform may have been black, haven't seen any indication it was used in the field.

Early war panzer crews had some funky uniforms and seem to remember seeing photos from Normandy (of 12th SS???) with panzer crews wearing "Fonzie" style black leather jackets.

Also SS panzer crews had black uniforms. This pic however is of Wehrmacht.

Sometimes grey uniforms were also used, I think.
