Re: Captured & converted French equipments in axis service
The incomplete list of French AFVs in German service and here's some of the text word by word.
Renault FT 17
'...They remained in service right up until 1944, when the Germans used captured FT 17s for street fighting in Paris. By this time, of course, they were hopelessly out of date...'
Hotchkiss H-39 Light Tank
'...After the surrender, the Germans employed the H-39 for occupation duties...'
Renault R-35 Light Tank
'...The Germans used the R-35 as a garrison and training tank and adapted many for use as artillery tractors, ammunition carriers and self-propelled artillery carriages. for the latter, the turrets were removed and used for coastal defences...'
SOMUA S-35 Medium Tank
'...A radio was fitted as standard and the tank was supplied with a sufficiently powerful main armament to be still in service in German hands on D-Day in June 1944...'
P 107
'...Following the fall of France to the Germans in 1940, the P 107 was pressed into Wehrmacht service, being used to tow field and anti-tank guns. then the Germans stripped the vehicles of their superstructures and fitted armoured hulls in their place. most of these conversions remained in France for training purposes and general duties, though they did see combat following the D-Day landings in June 1944. The Germans retained the mounted roller under the nose of the vehicle, which was used to assist the vehicle in and out of ditches...'
