Hello,

Indeed you are right about the Latil KTL4 ... I have the book but missed this page :(
I was looking for a light personnal carrier or all-terrain staff car.

The Latil KTL4 is used for the 105mm Mle1913 Schneider field gun.
There is the short version, the tractor for the gun itself and the KTL4 with the longer chassis (which can be seen on your photo) which carries the ammunition.

The KTL4 on the photo can transport 8 men in the rear part or 24 shells. There is then also a trailer with 80 shells.

Regards,

David

Hello,

About the Indian motorcycles in the French Army in 1940. The French army used various motorcycles (solo or with side-car) :

1) Ordinary solo motorcycles :
• Peugeot P107 and P122
• Terrot HSTA and HAD
• Gnôme & Rhône Major and Supermajor

2) Cross-country solo motorcycles :
• Terrot RATT and RDTT
• Gnôme & Rhône and Motobécane D5A
• Simca-Sevitame B
• Peugeot TT112

and a few British ones :
• Royal Enfield 350
• Ariel 350
• Velocette 350
• Triumph 500

3) Motorcycles with side-car :
• Terrot RDA
• Monet-Goyon L5A1
• René Gillet K1 and G1
• René Gillet Type L1
• Gnôme & Rhône XA
• Terrot VATT
• Gnôme & Rhône AX2

and a few from foreign origin :
• Indian 340B (USA)
• Gillet-Herstal 373 (Belgium)

5,000 (2nd September 1939) + 7,000 (8th June 1940) Indian 340B were ordered but only 2,000 delivered (the first in March 1940).
They are mainly used in the GRDIs (reconnaissance groups).

The side-car was nonetheless judged too small and the fuel capacity not sufficient. The second bach is ordered with modifications (if possible).

Here is a photo of Indian motorcycles and side cars from the 97e GRDI (part of the Foreign Legion). The men are armed with MAS36 rifles and the LMGs are FM Mle1924/29s.

David

Indian Model 340

#754

Post by Martinski » 09 Dec 2005, 10:18

Hi David,

Many thanks for the info and picture; it is well known.

I try to analyze the order as made by the French Army (or maybe Ministère de Guerre) in 1939. The batch was delivered early 1940 as proves your picture. After the invasion, several 340's were "incorporated" and used by the German Army.

I am now trying to get a more precise idea about the different types and their spare parts. This making use of the original Indian literature (Manuals and Spare Parts Lists).

The main problem is: finding and tracing the kind of pictures as the nice ones people publish on this board. One of my 340's was discovered on a shelf in Shirokoe in the center of Ukraine. It was left by its former "owners" and recovered by an old Ukrainian gentleman. He kept the bike until it was discovered again, so it came back tot Belgium. Now restoring it in its original livry.

But I really do need more pictures as the one you published in your thread. There are more of these around. Could you please also check the book "L'automobile sous l'uniforme 1939-40" (F. Vauvillier) and scan any available Indian 340 pictures for me please? I am in search for this publication until now. Looking forward.

As I do speak and read Russian currently, and also travel frequently (nearly every month) through these vast countries, I came across a number of recovered vehicles of all sorts. Not so long ago, I pictured the wreck of a recovered Panther, used in the Battle of Korsun (for Western people read Cherkassy !). I do own also thousands of pictures of recovered military motorcycles of all sorts. Writing a book about my "adventures" and discoveries now. Will be out Summer 2006. Keep you informed.

If I can help anybody out with translations Russian - English, please feel free to ask. No sweat. I also have access to some Ukrainian and Russian archives because I also help them out with advices and translations.

Again many thanks, looking forward,

Martinski

ex-French Beute Char B in Renault works

#757

Post by Franzl Rider » 21 Dec 2005, 10:40

As promised some time ago: The bombed Renault works. Were the "B" stands you can see Char B's. These were overhauled by the Germans to serve them as beute vehicles. The pic is a little fuzzie, but better than no picture. It is from a book from 1946.
