Generals staff car unknown (to me)

#1

Post by OFWKönig » 12 May 2021, 17:43

Ok guys, hope I won't do anything wrong as this is my first post as a newbie -
so please be gentle.

I've got this nice picture from a private photo album - don't know date nor location - but it has to be after June 1943 in the Netherlands, since the General in the car, sitting, is the infamous Wehrmachtsbefehlshaber in the Netherlands from 1940-45 and General der Flieger Christiansen and he already wears the DKiS which he was given on June 1st 1943 if the source is correct. It seems there was a big inspection and here he is leaving but in what car exactly? Searched nearly 100s of pictures but couldnt place it. Ok, the tyres sport the Mercedes star but the model is not clear to me, maybe a Sondermodell? What is the most curious thing here is the leaper figure which reminds me of Luftwaffe aircraft - a Bf 109 perhaps which is surely rare.
Tried to enhance the picture with Photoshop but that's the best you get out of it. Since I am researching the album can anybody place the car, the event, the persons beside Christiansen etc, best with further pictures.
Thanks in advance
Chris

Hi Chris,

the staff car could be a Mercedes-Benz type 320 "Pullman-Cabriolet F". Here a pic of such a car out of the book " Deutsche Autos 1920 - 1945" by Werner Oswald.

Regards

Bert

Hello Chris,
It is not easy from the photo, but the 'plane looks like a twin-engine, single tail fin, type. Perhaps a bomber, a Heinkel 111 maybe?
Cheers,
Kerry.

Hi Bert, thanks a lot, thats definitely the right car - especially worthy for a General der Flieger !
Being that clarified I wonder whether there is a picture somewhere showing the leaper of that very car.
Since I am rather into aircrafts of WW2 I do wonder about the attachment on the left above the tyres - looks like a light too?
Greetings from the Rhineland

Hi Kerry, thanks for the idea, it is hard to identify - it could even be a Bf110 due to its slender fuselage and I might even see the small double tail fins - unfortunately I can't enhance the pic anymore.
I would be cool whether anybody of the community knowns of another picture of that very staff car of General Christiansen, since he was quite a big fish.
Cheers, Chris

Hello

He used different staff cars during the war, but this one is a Mercedes and the figure at the front was a Me109.

Wow Kurt,
amazing, thank you for this picture - you made my day - much appreciated!
So it was a Bf 109 after all.
Kind regards
Chris
