That picture of the Porsche Tiger with the hole in the side of it's turret is very interesting. It looks like quite a big hole, and would need to have been a powerful gun to penetrate the armour on that part of the turret. Any ideas on what made the hole, ie tank, gun?

seeing these pics i started to think about something....Are there pics of tanks being destroyed by aircraft (guns only)?
As the germans needed big guns (Bk3.7 for instanse on the Ju-87g) to destroy tanks so what would the guns of a P-51/P-47/Typhoon achieve...

Hello Davethelight,

Could it be the anti tank-round from a 6-pounder gun ?
I am not a specialist but it can be.

P.s : Also you can take a look at this brilliant specialised website, with lots
of unique pictures and information of the Tiger tank.

Hello Hein.
I would not have thought a 6 pounder would have the power to penetrate a Porsche KT on the side of it's turret. I'm no expert, but I thought the 6 pounder shell was only about 57milimetres wide, and the armour on the side of Porsche KT was about 80 milimetres thick, and sloped.
Am I mistaken?

It's very close indeed, the 6 pd gun penetrated just a bit more than 100mm armor at 500 meters, the Porsche KT turret side had about the the same vertical equivalent protection so I say,it's not unimageable that a 6pd with L/52 caliberl could penetrate it at short range. :?

Could it be a 17-Pounder A/T Gun or a 17 Pounder Sherman Firefly ?

That seems a more likely possibility hein.

I thought the max penetration for a British 57mm gun was 78mm?
