Re: Captured Russian Vehicles in German Service
Carius,
Regarding the truck photo you posted - thats an early GAZ-AA with built up sides to the rear body, which was a common modification in German use.Incidentally the GAZ-MM looked identical, so it could be a GAZ-MM.
Originally I thought the GAZ-MM was the designation for the GAZ with a simplified cab, flat top mudguards etc that was built from 1941 but this is not the case, as the GAZ-MM was actually introduced in 1938 and was a 'GAZ-AA' with an uprated engine. The simplified wartime GAZ-MM retained the same designation as the prewar version even though it looked more basic.
Which reminds me to mention that according to 'Soviet Trucks of WW2' by Jim Kinnear and Jochen Vollert, from Tankograd Publishing - the Germans only captured prewar style GAZ trucks and next to none of the simplified flat top GAZ-MM or GAZ-AAA vehicles! Amazing but true it seems, as out of my growing collection of GAZ truck photos I have none of these simplified vehicles showing them in German service - Why?
