Hi Max,
Didn't I say "first prototype"?
Note also on it the wheel hub is a bit different.
However, since those bonnet sides were interchangeable, if the front axle isn't visible the only firm ID points for me are the hub and the distance between the wheel and the fender.
Cheers!

Hello gents,
I think that I must be missing something here. To me, the front hub does not look like the flat disc dead hub type, I have blown it up and enhanced as far as is possible and it looks to have the central "nipple" that is missing on the 4x2. I know that the quality of print makes absolute interpretation difficult, but that is what I see. I am also very sure that it cannot be from the period of postwar production, notice a fitted notek light and the apparent Greek {?} location, surely not a feasible combination from 1946? I do see that the soldiers involved do not seem to be wearing the national eagle insignia, so possibly POW. From that perspective it could just be postwar, but not as late as 1946-48, I consider.
I do admire the detail that goes into all of your deliberations, without the direction you both, in fact all, give I would not be able to pick up on the subtleties of these identifications. Thanks guys,
Kerry

Hi Kerry,
"flat disc dead hub type", "central "nipple" that is missing on the 4x2" - how to understand this?
Usually the concave wheel center with "nipple" (in fact a lubrication cap) is sure sign for a dead front axle, not on KHD/Magirus trucks only.

Wouldn't the Klöckner-Deutz Maultier in the top right photo be 4x2 when on all-wheels being based on the S 3000; Note no front differential?

Oops, mea culpa. I was in a hurry today, of course Maultiers weren't with driving front axle. The KHD jokers has misled me, putting on the front wheel hub almost the same cap as on their "allrads". And I didn't spot that tracked part. No excuse for me anyway.
Thanks for pointing it, Markus, and here is the correct picture:

Hi,

really a difficult question. Maybe a little help: here two good pics of an A-type and S-type out of the booklet Waffen-Arsenal Special Band 19 "Magirus Militärfahrzeuge 1930 - 1945" by H.-G. Mayer-Stein for comparing. Notice the heavy load on the flatbed: beams.

Regards

Bert

I was basing my hypothesis on the comparison scans posted by Max. I mistakenly thought that the lefthand scan was of a 4x2, with a flat centre cap, and the righthand represented a 4x4 with a raised centre topped by a "nipple", or projection of some sort. Now even more confused,
Kerry.

Hi Bert,
I can't see anything difficult here, those 4x2 and 4x4 front hubs are easily distinguishable.
Found a nice pic of a postwar Allrad which most probably is a war survivor. The front axle and wheel are very well visible here, the picture is also interesting because the truck apparently has an identity crisis, if judging from the rings-adorned radiator filler cap.
Just don't tell me now it is Krupp!

To balance the things, also a postwar S330 tug:

Indeed, the front wheel is a bit different (2 vent holes only) but the hub is all the same.

The German-Russian meeting in Poland, September 1939 (note the Russian tank commander in the car and BA-6 or 10 armoured car on the background)

I'm not much into the cars but IMHO it is 1935 DKW Front Zweisitzer (Meisterklasse). Whatever it could be, I like those blackout caps which in fact are blackout hats :D I'm not much into the uniforms too bit I think they are Polish.
Cheers!

Hi Ilian: I think you are correct on the DKW. Also, a Finnish variant on headlight shields.
