Evening Mike:
Interesting photo and I wonder who can ID the vehicle. I thought I had it at once as a Krupp Protze but on looking at it again there are a lot of ID clues that do not match. Headlight placement, mudguards, and a couple of other things.
Would like to hear from others as to their opinion.

Howdy Bill, Thanks again my friend. As for the type of truck, It looks a little like the Horch type 40 but I don't think that it is that, but something very close.Bill Murray wrote:Evening Mike:

Protze
Hi guys,
It is definitely a Protze, the spare wheel is there between the front and rear wheels. And going by the number plate, 1469, this vehicle belongs to either the 11th, 12th or 13th Kompanie LSSAH, looks like the photo was taken in Holland/France 1940.
I have a fairly extensive database of LSSAH number plates, and the early range is remarkably consistant with number plate and vehicle type. I have Protze's with 1446 (11th Kompanie), and 1513 (13th I.G. Kompanie).
Mike, any chance of a larger scan of the tactical marking on the front left fender (our right), as this will tell us the Kompanie. Thanks.
Cheers
Steve

I now agree with Steve, it is a Protze. Using a magnifying glass, I can make out the spare and the windscreen being folded down changes the appearance of the engine hood. I would imagine the other problem with the grille area might be wooden limbs (fascines??) used for extra traction that you often see bundled on the front of German vehicles. Also, the front of the cargo body is a match.

Re: Protze
Thanks Steve for the information on my photo. I really appreciate it! As for the a larger scan, well The one I posted was done at 800 dpi and played with on photo shop to get it as clear as possible. So sadly any more of a close up just blurs out.stoveb wrote:Hi guys,

As for the the Protze ID, well I have to agree with the consensus. There is another Protze behind this one that does not have the add ons to the hood and I see by comparing the two that they are the same type of vehicel. Thanks all!
