Re: ► Photothread: Allied Vehicles in German Service
Hello Sturm,
To expand on what ilfil said, the firm of County Commercial Cars of Fleet in Hampshire produced kits to convert 4x2 Ford chassis to either 6x2 or 6x4 configuration. For military use they provided these 6x4 kits to Ford in Dagenham, Ford then built the vehicles, using these kits and their own chassis, on their production line. A very limited run were produced, using the E917T chassis, with assorted specialist end uses, balloon winches and photographic tenders (tender is a term used within the Royal Air Force to denote a lorry) being two known uses.
Interesting and rare vehicles, even in British ownership, much more so in German usage.
Postwar, County went on to produce a line of 4x4 and crawler conversions of Ford tractors, finally going out of business in the 1990s.
Regards,
Kerry.

No difference. E917T indicates the country of origin, model year and type (here British-build 1939 model with 85 hp engine and 157" wheelbase), the usual Ford model index practice. So Sussex could be also 51, 79 or E817T, for example. Note though, in those designations only 2-axle trucks wheelbases are coded (no multiaxle trucks production by Ford back then), so here Sussex name is really important, indicating Six wheeler. There were two of them on the same chassis: Sussex 6x4 and Surrey 6x2, both ofically known as Fordson, used almost exclusively by RAF. Most probably this one is "photographic tender".

Here, another question about a captured Ford. I think it is a Model 1940 15cwt truck but... Where was manufactured ?
US, UK, Canada, Australia, ??
Re: ► Photothread: Allied Vehicles in German Service
Hi Sturm,
Being RHD, you can skip Ford USA. Most probably it is Canadian or British-made but could be also Australian or even Indian assembly. Regretfully I can't be more specific without seeing the manufacturer's plate.
Cheers!
