Could be MG-Bataillon 5, but crosses were common.tigre wrote: ↑06 Jun 2019, 00:38Hello to all ; more...........................

Re: ► Photothread: Vehicles with unit markings
Does anyone recognize this one? Location: Gorki (near Smolensk), August 1941.

It might be 12 Infanterie Division, except that 12 ID was never near Smolensk but it did have a shield just like that with three colours.

It was my thought, too, but as you say, it wasn't in the area at all.Alanmccoubrey wrote: ↑17 Jul 2019, 20:03It might be 12 Infanterie Division, except that 12 ID was never near Smolensk but it did have a shield just like that with three colours.

Re: ► Photothread: Vehicles with unit markings
The funny thing is that the truck in the photo I just posted a detail from has the same symbol on its other fender, but that photo is dated August 1941 and couldn't possibly show a vehicle of the 7.PD.

Re: ► Photothread: Vehicles with unit markings
The shield could be one of several divisional insignia used by the 12. Infanterie-Division. If so, it fought just east of Cholm in August 1941

If the original photograph was taken near Smolensk then the fact that 12 ID was east of Kholm in August 1941 is of no help to us. It is over 350 km from Smolensk to Kholm.

Re: ► Photothread: Vehicles with unit markings
I'm pretty sure now that the Gorki mentioned is another Gorki, as it is a rather common placename in Russia (meaning "hill"). There's even a Gorki near Cholm, but it was held by the 123. Yes, there are many places called Gorki, which means Hillocks (plural) not hill, Gorka is a feminine noun which means hillock or even a cabinet or a steep climb or if you really stretch it the week following Easter, a very full language is Russian.
