Re: Vehicles with unit markings
I'm afraid that is not 3 PD but 4 PD, havce a look at the divisional sign in the dark shield beside the turret number. You'll see that it is the 4PD rune over the crossed swords adopted when the divisional commander was awarded the Swords to his KC. The standing bear is a regimental insignia which has caused many misidentifications !Luftflotte2 wrote:Panzer IV of the 3rd Panzer Division.

Yes, it seems all my books are just large collections of mis-identifications.

Re: Vehicles with unit markings
Hello,
nobody knows from where this nonsens with the bears originated from. I think one of the first publications with the wrong identification was Panzer Colours from Bruce Culver. All in all, the Panzer Colours series were good references at their time. But sadly full of misidentifications...
Another wrong article was in Steel Masters written by Jean Restayn.
The bears of Panzer Regiment 35 and 3. Panzer Division are not similar. One is standing, one is walking. Another point is that Panzer Regiment 35 never had anything to do with 3. Panzer Division. Another difference is the way of application of the unit signs. The Panzer Regiment 35 bear was painted large on the turret sides while the 3. Panzer Division bear was applied much smaller mainly in a yellow shield.
Here is a good comparison on wwIIdaybyday:

One example of the application of the 3. Panzer Division bear can be found on a Opel Oplympia on my site:

Hello forum, I am new here. For personal reasons I am particularly interested in this truck. The picture seems to be Tunisia in 1943 during German surrender. Can anybody confirm? The other shots posted by Bill 13 show similar surrendering trucks from the 19 Flak Div. Any guesses what the unit marking in the fender could be? Any help would be highly appreciated! Thanks in advance
