This is a post war picture of a german registered red cross truck in a foreign country. Of note is the clothing of the civilian (50s or 60s) and the west-german (FRG) Zollkennzeichen. A licence plate used for german registered cared to be transfered to a foreign country until the 90s(?). You can still see some of them, even here in the Philippines.Maxschnauzer wrote:Mercedes-Benz Typ L 1500 S:

Re: Photothread: German Red Cross Vehicles
Thanks for the info, Chris. I suspected that it was post-war from the license plate, but posted it anyway since it is a "German Red Cross Vehicle" and was built during the period '41-'44. Interesting about the foriegn country, I've never noticed any of those plates here over the years but then again I don't spend a whole lot of time in Manila.
Cheers,
Max

Hi Max!
I think your postwar M-B is 3-tonner. To me it looks typical civilian vehicle in Bundeswehr use, such vehicles are in the "partially militarized" category (Teilmilitarisiert) and in most cases this "militarization" was restricted to green paint (or, later, even 3-colour camo).
AFAIK in those times the 1,5-ton load class was already covered by another vehicle from the same stable, the Unimog.

Cheers!

...
This is for sure not a de- or partialy militarised (former) Bundeswehr truck. 1. it has a multicolored glossy surface. Bundswehr vehicles until mid 80s were colored flat olive drab all over/ uniformly . 2. the 3-5 to class were AFAIR MANs (if they didn't use refurbished ex US GMCs) with a convertable driver's cabin (Like [some of] the Bw-Unimogs). The enclosed driver's cabin -I think- came with the second / third gen. MANs with flat front. 3. if this was a Bw truck, it would have have military features (or its remains) -like added lights- and towing/ pushing capabilities. Nothing like that is visible. 4. if it were in Bundeswehr use, it could only go to NATO-allied countries and would retain it's military licence plate. It would not use a civilian customs licence plate. The Bundeswehr of the early years (until the 70s) did not really resale their outdated equipment until they were officially phased out and replaced.
I think this is a (former?) civilian truck, serving the (German?) Red Cross. The tone would probably be shades of grey. I cannot say if this a pre-, wartime or post war built truck though. You might be right, that it is a post war built truck.

Hi Chris,
I'm more than sure this M-B is postwar vehicle, most probably it is model L311 3,5-tonner:

Re: Photothread: German Red Cross Vehicles
Hello guys,
Thanks for the info.
I have to agree with ilfil, after looking more closely at the side of the bonnet it definitely opens like the post-war L311 not the L1500S. It's a litttle more streamlined also.

I think the nearest ambulance is a Horch, with perhaps a Renault AGC at the back?
Kerry.
Kerry.
Re: Photothread: German Red Cross Vehicles
Hi Kerry!
Yep, on the background it is Renault AGC 3 ambulance.
BTW, I didn't know about 3100 of these were produced within a year, from December 1939 to the end of 1940! Norhing to wonder it is frequent sight on the German pics.
Cheers!

According to my notes this is a US Army Signal Corps photo made in Fel near Chambois in August 1944. It shows an SdKfz 251 of 2.Panzerdivision. The medics are from the Regimental Medical Detachment, 359th InfRgt, 90.InfDiv.Maxschnauzer wrote:An interesting pic of Allied medics with injured German POW and a beute Sd. Hi Max,
on 23rd December You posted an interesting pic with Red cross sisters. Could the first truck be a NAG 2-tonner with 65 hp? Here a pic of this truck out of the booklet "Taschenbuch Deutscher LKW-Bau" by Wolfgang H. Gebhardt.
Regards
Bert
