GAZ
In Trucks of the Wehrmacht by Reinhard Frank there is another photo of a more conventional GAZ-AA (on page 178) that is marked with a large J which he says is Mountain Jager Regt 99 in Rostov. Was it unique to this unit?

That "J" is actually a script "I" and stood for "Instandsetzung", the maintenance platoon/company of any given unit- quite common on German vehicles from cars to recovery tanks, although fairly rare on the latter. The Austrian army still uses a distinctive sign incorporating the "J" today.

Interesting 'blinds' for the windows. They must be to keep in the heat perhaps in winter? If they were to cut down on reflected light then it would have been easier to paint the glass.

Civilian GAZ-AA - it didn't matter to the Germans, they used either if they captured one
