This is so cool. I really like watching your 3D models come to life :D

Thx much....

Parts like plumbing fixtures, railings, tubes and control linkages are somewhat difficult to do with desktop 3D printers. In my case, I would have to print in sections and piece them together. The seams on long skinny parts are harder to hide so for these more delicate geometries, I decided to use shapeways service to print them. I printed the whole tender for about $45 and the shapeways parts shown cost about $50 (which is why I stopped using shapeways and bought my own printer). They did turn out fairly nice.

For comparison, I attached a picture showing one valve fixture as I printed it on the Form 2 printer alongside the same part printed via Shapeays.
My part cost pennies while the shapeways part about $5 plus shipping. They are both quite nice. I also included an update picture showing some of the tubing and linkages attached to the boiler.

The beast is actually starting to look like a Prussian G5.2 :)

Have you considered printing the fittings and other bits onto a piece of brass or copper rod / wire?

Hi - originally I had a printer that would print Master parts in wax so that I could do lost wax castings of valves and small parts in white metal and maybe harder metals as well. That process took too much equipment and time and I went with the a more conventional process that just hardens light sensitive resins. In the past I have experimented with 3D printing (at Shapeways) using Brass and Steel just to see what the limitations of that process were. You can indeed print some fairly usable parts in Brass but they are usually fairly simple geometries (see attached photo). Results would probably be quite good for larger parts in 1/16th or 1/6th scale but printing smaller and or more delicate parts in 1/32 scale (or smaller) would be problematic. One other issue with printing in metals is that you cannot sprue several parts together which results in increased cost.

The picture shows a wheel in 1/32nd scale I did for a small Industrial Deutz Diesel locomotive. The surface texture is a bit rough but if the part is large enough (and structurally strong enough) it can be buffed out to get some more refined surfaces textures.

Hi - I am still slowly working towards building up the whole 28cm SKL/40 E.u.B. Bruno support train and just finished printing all the parts for what I call wagon #4 (wagon #1 being the modified Ommk ammo car up front behind the gun carriage). While I am not 100% certain, I believe wagons #3 and #4 were modified older Gw wagons. I decided to use standard Evergreen Plastic sheet for the roof just because it will be cheaper/easier than printing (as well as stronger and something that will provide nice and straight edges).

Please find attached a few pics of the wagons, a quick rendering of the whole train for reference and wagon parts almost ready to assemble.

Hi - just as a fun project, I did some out reach and Billie at Panzer Concepts decided to work with me to do the Bruno in resin as a limited kit. Billie's participation in the modeling world goes way back and he was even one of the original Master builders for the old Dragon Wagon resin kit among other things. This Bruno kit is a pretty large effort even starting with a good 3D model.

My research on the design continues and after finding some additional original Krupp factory content in Europe, we made some updates to make Bruno even more accurate.

We are still using FormLabs Form 2 3D printing to make the masters but in many more parts as compared to my one off approach where everything is integrated into only a few parts.

A special thank you goes out to Andrzej Ditrich from Poland who has also provided assistance on this project.

Check it out if you can. https://www.facebook.com/pg/Panzerconcepts/photos/

HI - JUST A QUICK UPDATE TO SHOW HOW SOME OF THE PARTS FOR THE 28CM BRUNO KIT IN 1/35TH SCALE IS COMING ALONG. SOME OF THE CASTING WORK IS JUST BEAUTIFUL.

OUR MODEL DEPICTS ONE OF THE 28CM S. K. L/40 BRUNO RAILWAY GUNS THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN USED IN WWI, GIVEN TO BELGIUM AS PART OF REPARATIONS AFTER THE WAR, CAPTURED IN 1940 BY THE GERMANS AND THEN USED IN FRANCE DURING WWII.

THROUGHOUT WWII, EISENBAHN-ARTILLERIE-BATTERIE 721 OPERATED TWO OF THE OLDER CONFIGURATION GUNS (REICHSBAHN WAGON NUMBERS 918539 AND 918540) IN FRANCE. EISENBAHN-ARTILLERIE-BATTERIE 655 ALSO UTILIZED FOR A SHORT TIME ANOTHER TWO OF THE OLDER CAPTURED BRUNO GUNS IN 1940 AGAINST TARGETS IN BRIMONT AND RHEIMS FRANCE. THESE WERE TEMPORARY REPLACEMENTS FOR TWO 15CM GUNS THAT HAD BEEN DAMAGED. ONE THE OLD BRUNOS ASSIGNED WAS DAMAGED AFTER ONLY A FEW DAYS OF USE AND WAS THEN REMOVED FROM SERVICE (WAGON NUMBER 107513).

Hi – not that I have the faintest idea of how to do this legitimately but have been playing around
with creating a camo pattern that was close to what was used on the captured Bruno gun 1918 to try
and see what it would look like if I were to paint the model in a similar fashion (before I spent the
time trying). The attached is only 3 jpgs of texturing applied to the whole model (and in low resolution).
Its sort of a 5 minute cheat. I think it looks cool. I am still trying to add some sort of patina and mute the
tones a bit more but I am almost a convert regarding applying this camo pattern to the model -
Happy Sunday!

Hi - here is an update to what I call wagon #4 for the Bruno support train. There is photo showing the individual parts above. Once I started building the wagon, I had some problems with warping. Originally, I wanted to be able to open the doors to show the interior so I had printed the doors as separate parts. These showed quite a bit a warping as they dried out so I decided to reprint the sides in two parts. One part was about 75% of the overall length and the other part the remaining 25%. I was able to hide the seem under one of the vertical side braces. I assembled the sides, front & back as a simple box and then attached it to the floor/frame then added the roof. I would have achieved better quality using the printed parts as a Master and then making resin copies of the parts but overall the wagon is acceptable as 20 part model.
Happy Modeling
