Krupp KW14 Flak wagon

Post by EPOCH3 » 07 Mar 2020 17:02

Awhile back I modeled and 3D printed the Krupp-Daimler KDI artillerie zugmaschine/truck
in 1/35th scale. I enjoyed doing something different (from artillery) so I took on another WWI truck project for fun. I was a bit surprised that this has turned into such a challenge though. The Krupp Flak wagon KW14 was a purpose built mobile Flak wagon and was built in large numbers. After spending some time researching this vehicle and studying a few photos I found that it was a very modular design. There are many access panels everywhere and almost every one is unique and has unique brackets and hinges to mount it. Little by little I am figuring it out. Just sharing a work in progress. Hopefully fun won't turn into work (ha ha).

I recently bought a cheap little 3D printer for $239 to do quick builds of small parts that would free my other printer up for larger tasks. Working them together so far seems to be a good solution for speeding up work. The first experimental prints I did for the truck was strictly using the small printer. I have been experimenting with support-less prints meaning I try and print parts right on the build platform without added supports that then later need to be removed. So far this process works pretty well for the right sort of part. These first test prints were of a bank of 7.7cm Flak ammo (shown after just completing and still driping) and a set of rear wheels. I really like the wheels. More later :)

8-) Cool ! And if you print a 7,7 cm L/27 Flak gun, you can use the same truck and get a Rheinmetall 7,7 cm leichte Kraftwagen-Flak L/27.

A few more pics of my Krupp Flak wagon build.

Note: the parts are not yet cleaned up entirely and are sticky to the touch.
They will soak in alcohol for 5 minutes or so and then get rinsed in water to
then let dry. I then UV cure them for 5 minutes to harden/dry.

I made 5 frames since I will be making several variants. 3 prints had some failed
components that I need to print fixes for like fenders etc. I also am experimenting with
some new resin (blue parts) on a small Photon 3D printer from Anycubic. The prints for
the most part are fairly good although a few parts have separated/delayered.

For anyone interested, the frame took about 6Hours and 15 minutes to print (1251 layers),
used 13.7 ml of resin (28.1 ml total when including supports) which would have resin/material
costs for the part at about $2 each (or $4.18 each when including supports)

For comparison - the front wheel would cost about $0.14 each

Progress is slow going but it's starting to look like a truck.
I was just test fitting some parts trying to decide
whether to show rear walkway/fenders in the down
position (operational) or up. Parts are still rough
meaning I have only removed supports but not yet
cleaned up.

Gun, mounting pedestal, lamps/lights and some detail tool parts etc all in 1/35th scale.
Overall gun/barrel is about 3 inches long and the pedestal is about 1.5 inches tall.
Parts are shown as they printed (not even cleaned up yet)
Regards
