Romanian He-111H

#1

Post by Mistel1 » 19 Apr 2002, 10:26

I have an Italeri Luftwaffe He-111H kit, and i want to complete it in Romanian colors. Although this is a H-20/22 kit, i can also build a H-6 from it. Now, i need some help.

I have an old Matchbox catalogue that shows a completed Romanian AF He-111 kit (the pic gave me this idea). Although i can find some Romanian crosses, and paint the rudder in Romanian colors, i cannot imagine how to make the thin blue 45° lines running all along the fuselage on each side. So i have to build a different Romanian He-111. Can anyone help me with descriptions, or better, with drawings or photos?
Thanks.

Hi Mistel 1

As from my knowledge the Romanian He-111s did not have thin blue 45° lines running all along the fuselage on each side !
But maybe I’m wrong ?! I should ask some friends !
Keep in touch,

Cristian

Hello Maxfax,

Thanks for your concern. I think i should be more specific about these blue lines: they run all along the fuselage indeed, interrupted only by the Romanian cross. And they are quite short, i.e. only the height of the horizontal arm thickness of the Romanian cross...

I don't recolect either He-111 having such lines. You can find a splinter scheme for romanian He-111 for eastern front in Summer 1943 following the link below. It is actually a picture for decals but it might guide you a little. You can also use the scheme from the slovak plane (RLM 65/70/71) for the romanian plane.

There were no He-111H units in the Air Corps in 1943. The only Romanian He-111 in 1943 on the Eastern Front were the ones of Grupul Mixt Cdor. Iosifescu, which fought only in the early months of 1943 (I think only in January and a part of February), so I think they would have had winter camouflage.

The lines on the fuselage could have been a way of marking the missions flown.

A good profile is in "The Rumanian Airforce the prime decade", by Denes Bernad. The book is stil availbale on Amazon.

Prejo,

Very interesting... The Romanian He-111 image you attached represents the same plane as that in matchbox catalogue! The numbers 1 and 20 are there, all right. The only differences are that in matchbox, the yellow oblique stripes are blue, they are less densely placed and the angle with the horizontal is smaller.

Also from the drawing, the cammo seems to be dark green over dark sand, in contrast to Matchbox' med. green/dark green. Also the Matchbox propeller spinner is a bright blue (Romanian flag blue?) instead of red with a black stripe...

Regards...

Hello Mistel1

I think the artwork from Matchbox is a little bit fantastic !
No one except Matchbox, represent in this way a romanian He-111 !

Cristian

Hello Mistel1,
The camo scheme found with that link represents the summer scheme and it is indeed dark sand/dark green. The other scheme is dark green with black green. So, no medium green. Also the spinners are red not blue. I think that the designer from Matchbox dreamed one night about a romanian He-111 and represented it as in his dream :D Also the thin stripes you mentioned could be indeed the missions flown by the plane, as Max just told us.

regards,

Max, Prejo and Victor,

Thanks for all the info you supplied. Dark sand-dark green cammo is the one i chose for my model. Sincerely, it would be cool to paint those spinners in that bright blue, but i'll sate myself with red/black...

Regards,

-Kemal
