British 12in BL Howitzer MK 1/35th scale railway gun - 3D printed

Post by EPOCH3 » 27 Nov 2017 21:28

Hi - I was working on several British railway guns and was side tracked with my Bruno project - I am just getting back to them now. Here are a few pictures showing the beginnings of a 12in BL Howitzer MKI on MKI railway gun carriage.

The deck structure of the mounting assembly turned out to be way to thin and failed. I went back and measured the 3D model and it was only .1mm which is too thin for large flat surfaces. I attached a few photos of the failure just for anyone interested. The failure pics do show some of the details which printed pretty well I think. I scrapped off most of the failed deck material and I think it will be salvageable (but will use on another project). I can just reprint a revised deck. I thickened up the deck design and added some tread plate to it as well and will reprint it as a single, integrated part for this model.

Superb work, Epoch! Look forward to seeing this with more parts as you print them.

I have a Dragon Karl which I've had for ages, never had the bottle to start!

Hi a few more pics of the British 12" BL Howitzer on MK I

I redid the truck assemblies (shown), printed the primarily jack assemblies and did the ammo hoist.
I will provide more photos of those later-

A few updates to my 12in BL Howitzer project -

As previously mentioned, the main deck portion of the upper carriage
failed. I didn't want to waste the upper carriage so I made an experiment
with cutting out the failed portion and then just reprinting the deck.
I added a tread plate texture to the reprint which helped to add a bit of
structural integrity (while not making the part look too thick and out of scale).
I still had some issues (mainly with the railings) but I will work those issue out
in final print.

A major screw up was encountered printing the second copy of
the front and rear sections of the rail car carriage itself. I printed both
simultaneously and the print was scheduled to take 22 hours. The printer
stopped for some reason with only 9 minutes left and I could not get the
printer to restart to complete the job. Not wanting to throw away over 21 hrs
of work, I created a patch part for the portion which did not print as a
separate file. I printed two of those and just sanded the main parts down to
try and get close enough in angle to be able to add the patch parts without
having too much of a gap between the parts - not perfect
but looks pretty good.

Still a work in progress.... a couple of fixes still needed (remove railing and reprint for one), a couple of small parts added,
started to clean up rough surfaces and coat of primer...
