Books on Nazi propaganda

#1

Post by George L Gregory » 24 Nov 2022, 01:46

Has anyone read Jay Baird's The Mythical World of Nazi War Propaganda, 1939–1945 and Ernest Bramsted's Goebbels and National Socialist Propaganda 1925-1945?

I'm interested in reading some of the older books about Nazi propaganda, I have read all (or at least most) of the more modern books about it.

I have both books and they are quite good. Baird’s book used to be hard to find and a bit expensive though . His is an analysis of mostly antisemitic propaganda during the war. Bramsted has a lot on Goebbels from his early career up through the war years. I can also highly recommend Robert Edwin Herzstein’s book “The War Hitler Won”. This is a very good read and not too expensive used.

George,

there are almost infinite numbers of these works, and the early works are very rare, and correspondingly expensive.

Dozens of early works from Franz Eher Verlag are now treated as very "rare", and it is not my job to name these books.
Franz-Eher-Verlag: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franz-Eher-Verlag

Individual books are now offered and traded for insane sums, the individual titles should not play a role here.

It is not uncommon for these books to lie in a box in front of the garden walls for everyone as a "gift", you just have to pick up these books and take them with you...
My place of residence is conservative, upper-class, you wouldn't believe what these people throw away, put out on the street, not to mention old books...

Both books are quite expensive to buy. For a decent copy of Baird’s book it will cost me £53.24 and for a decent copy of Bramsted‘s book it will cost me £43.81. Are they worth it?

I’ve got that book. I read it years ago and it was a good read.

George,

this is not about cheap historical books that can be found online.

These are leather-bound works that don't even appear in stores for a variety of reasons.
Many of these books with personal dedications that cannot be valued antiquarian at all.

The signatures and dedications were and are the real "icing on the cake".
One may wonder about this, but many of these books are very rare, hardly affordable.
Rarely does one find such a book at a German flea market, but that is still possible.

And I've been collecting historical books since the early 1970's, with a focus on Nationalsozialismus.

Propaganda even extended to the world of chess.

If you’ve read Herzstein’s book than you won’t need the other two. There’s nothing covered in either of them that Herzstein doesn’t spotlight in his book.

I've also got and read two other books by him titled The Nazis and When Nazi Dreams Come True: The Horrifying Story Of The Nazi Blueprint For Europe.

That may be so, but I'm sure that I'll read something that I didn't know. Plus, I like to try and get my hands on older books.

I have sent you a couple of private messages. If you could reply to me then that would be great. Thanks.

I read the messages however I’m not interested in selling them at this time. My copy of Bramsted is ex library with an ugly black cover (rebound by library) . My Baird is mint with Mylar protector. I’m seeing copies of these books on abebooks for about $30 - . For 100.00 max you could get both. Not bad in my opinion. Depends on how much you want them.
