XXX Corps (UK) histories

Post by The_Enigma » 10 Aug 2008 18:13

After being informed that VIII Corps released there own official history following the war (Link) i came to the conclusion that XXX Corps must have also done so ( ).

It is called Club Route in Europe and there is also a modern, a bit of a sister book if you like, called A Short History of 30 Corps in the European Campaign 1944-1945 which is crammed full of maps.

Has anyone read or know if the above two books on XXX Corps are worth purchasing to increase ones understanding of the NW Europe campaign and for the maps? (i.e. are they worth £55 total for the two of them)

Haven't read either book, but given your demonstrated interest in the subject, you will likely want to have at least the one with the good maps. The price you quote is rather forbidding though unless you are a millionaire and haven't told us! Suggest you try to find library copies you can examine at your leisure before you decide. Then if you choose to go for it, try to find used copies that haven't been beaten to hell. It is possible to pick up some real bargains that way. Chances are though that the two volumes you name have not seen a wide circulation, so that the odds are going to be longer in this case. Still, you never know unless you look. There might be one sitting out there for £5-10.

Good luck,
Michael

 Nope just a white coller worker making a UK Scale 3 salery (which aint much per month :P ) at the moment. Just may have a bit of spare cash laying around in a little while.

Scanning amazon you can get the books cheaper (incidentally the latter book mentioned actually appears to have also been originally printed in 1945) however there all 60 years old :(

Hi, my name is Barrie S Barnes and I am a military historian. I was interested to see the comments on XXX Corps, the two books mentioned I have got. At the moment I am working on a two part history of XXX Corps, the first of which comes out later this year, and is to be published by Helion Co. It is called 'A Stern Reckoning, XXX Corps from Gold Beach to the Seine'. The second part, 'A Final Reckoning, XXX Corps from the Seine to Germany' I am still working on, will probably take me at least the rest of this year to complete. I have used hundreds of first hand accounts and hundreds of contemporary photos to tell the tale, but I am always interested to hear from anyone who can help with my work in some way, or is just interested, keep the discussions going, best wishes, Barrie.
