You already contributed more than enough, Richard. You've made the eventual book "speak"- in the strident tones of the Gauleiter themselves.

Not to show off, although I'm doing just that - here are a few excerpts from the book pictured.

I guess you're right, James, and thanks by the way for your consistent enthusiasm for this and other projects with which I'm involved.

The swastika is a bit troubling with regard to overseas reception, but if a book devoted entirely to the lives and crimes of National-Socialists can't have at least one little Hakenkreuz, then political correctness has gone too far in this world. And German websites can always superimpose a red spot over the offending symbol.

So- here it is. Design by Roger Bender, original Gauleiter automobile pennant from a private collection.

Best wishes,
~ MIke

Well, what can I say? The words are superfluous with this cover of a really - in better sense - pompous book. For totalitarian rule the totalitarian cover suits better, isn't it? Way to go, Mike!

Igor

Hello Mike,

I am going crazy, just kidding, maybe. Anyway, any new news on your "Bender Book"? It's been so long since anything has come out from his end that his website is starting to collect dust. The Chinese need to hurry up and finish printing and ship, ship, ship before we all end up on AARP!

Best Regards,

James

Phone conversation with Roger Bender today. The book has reached the United States - undergoing customs inspection in Oakland, California (about 45 minutes from Bender HQ). So-- it'll be shipping out any day now.

Hi Michael,

Will this series of books have an analysis of their subjects as a group?

As you know, I feel previous books of this sort have missed a trick by concentrating exclusively on separate potted biographies while failing to analyse their own content to present a wider picture of the group.

For example, while Nazi propaganda emphasized social mobility provided by the Waffen-SS officer corps, analyses of its actual make up show that in fact a high proportion were either former army men, or from the same civilian backgrounds as the army officer corps.

It would be interesting to know who the upper reaches of the NSDAP were and whether they represented genuine social mobility, or whether the movement was rooted in the same middle classes as the "bourgeois" parties.

Who could provide a more informed analysis than the authors who assemble the material in the first place?

Cheers,

Sid.

No, Sid, I'm afraid I missed the mark again. :| I made no such attempt, as I'm just not trained or adept at producing such a study.

These are self-contained, abundantly illustrated biographical sketches, not a group analysis like that which Bruce Campbell produced on the SA leadership (The SA Generals and the Rise of Nazism, The University of Kentucky Press, 1998).

You're welcome, Sid.

There does exist a book, in the German language, that I think satisfies the requirement for a group analysis of the Gauleiters- It is Peter Hüttenberger's Die Gauleiter. Studie zum Wandel des Machtgefiiges in der NSDAP, Stuttgart, 1969 (239 pages). What it lacks is biographical details, hence my and Andreas' efforts.

~ Mike

The following is from http://books.google.com/books?id=iIWj44 ... er&f=false , which includes most of a chapter entitled "Viceroys of the Reich?" by Jeremy Noakes, which relies heavily on Hüttenberger's research. Some excellent data of the kind you seek may be found via the above link.

Hi Michael,

Many thanks. I have ordered Working towards the Fuhrer. At £4.61 including postage, it was too good to miss.

All the best,

Sid.

There's also Karl Höffkes Hitlers politische Generale from the mid-80s - readily available under £20. Not seen it, but I think it's akin to Michael's book rather than Hüttenberger's.

In addition, you can read the conferences of Hildebrandt in the very heavy (almost broke my bookshelf...) http://www.amazon.de/Mecklenburg-Weltkr ... 640&sr=1-2

And there's a study of NS Gaue here

http://www.amazon.de/Die-NS-Gaue-Mittel ... 640&sr=1-4

Also, Ralf Blank has done a lot of work on Gauleitern in the west:
