Best book on battle of Berlin
Best book on battle of Berlin
In your opinion what's the best book in english, german or russian you've ever read on the battle of Berlin?
I'm trying to improve my knowledge on this battle so I'd like to know the most useful books about it.
PS: please, don't answer "The Downfall" by Antony Beevor. I'm looking for SERIOUS military history books with OOBs, maps, first hand accounts and stuff like that.

Re: Best book on battle of Berlin
Any of Tony Le Tisier's books on Berlin will help you, I personally think that "Race for the Reichstag" and "The Battle for Berlin 1945" are the best for the fighting in the city while "Zhukov at the Oder" is excellent for the fighting to get to the city. Hamilton's "Bloody Streets" is full of excellent maps and if you can fight your way through the terrible "English" and rotten editing that the book has in abundance then you'll find some very interesting details of the fighting.

But what's the difference between Race for the Reichstag and the Battle of Berlin 1945?
About Venghaus... http://www.amazon.com/Berlin-1945-Ausbr ... 665&sr=8-1

The best day-to-day-compilation you can get
And Venghaus belonged to the defenders of Berlin

"Race for the Reichstag" pays less attention to the build up to the battle than does "Battle for Berlin".

Agree with J-H. The Wolfgang Venghaus book "Berlin 1945 - Die Zeit vom 16. April bis 2. Mai" (2nd Edition) is by far the best.

Re: Best book on battle of Berlin
In my private archive I have copies of the correspondence of a former Luftwaffe officer who 'stranded' with his men in Berlin and fought there to the bitter end with f.e. Tieke and Venghaus. How many time both spent for the reconstruction of the battle in uncountable.

Hi
In English i would say Bloody Streets by Stephan Hamilton is probably the best book available today. There is a couple of books which by Tony le Tissier which dont concentrate on Berlin alone. The first one is called With Our Backs To Berlin it is an anthology of accounts from German vets who fought in the Oder battles and in Berlin. The other one is Death Was Our Companion ,it is on the same format as the previous book it even has an good account by an ex Volkssturm officer, both of these books are available from the region of 5-10 GBP Stephan s book Bloody Streets is out of print at the moment as such second hand copies are quite expensive 100GBP is the cheapest ive seen !
Regards
Ron

Re: Best book on battle of Berlin
Cheapest copy of Venghaus is €165. Almost tempted to sell my copy. Almost.
It is the best book in German. I'd go with Bloody Streets for that detailed street-by-street analysis as nothing else in English comes close.
For readability, I'll still pick up Ryan's The Last Battle.

Re: Best book on battle of Berlin
I do not think "Bloody Street" contains much of Soviet perspective of the battle of the Berlin,Tony le Tissier's books are more balanced, though still depended much more on German sourceDutto1 wrote:Hi

Re: Best book on battle of Berlin
I agree with that but what makes Bloody Streets groundbreaking is the the account of the battle which is virtually street by street, and the maps using aerial imagery no one has done that before in such detail.mars wrote:I do not think "Bloody Street" contains much of Soviet perspective of the battle of the Berlin,Tony le Tissier's books are more balanced, though still depended much more on German sourceDutto1 wrote:Hi

Re: Best book on battle of Berlin
I've got a quick question! In which book the battle of Seelow Heights is deeply covered?

Plus Gerald Ramm's two stunning anthologies:

and there's also quite a lot of rare publications available from the Seelow Heights museum:
