Hi does anyone have any further information about the late author Rolf Hinze ??

I tried researching him on the internet to no avail , and Helion gives little information about this author

I would have love to find any information about the author Rolf Hinze , who is now sadly dead .
He wrote 3 books which were recently translated and re-published in English
by Helion Books - CRUCIBLE OF COMBAT , TO THE BITTER END , &
COURAGE OF DESPERATION about the Eastern Front battles in 1944-145
I am very impressed with these 3 great books that will add to
his reputation as a military author , in the English Language

kind regards

David

If you enjoyed those volumes make sure you find a copy of 'East Front Drama 1944', which covers part of Operation Bagratian.

I'd like to know something about him too. In one of his books there is a photo of him in general's uniform but he isn't listed in Keilig.
Best,

Hello,

I didn't find much about Rolf Hinze on the internet. Hinze was born in 1922 and by the end of WW II he was a Lt.. In 1945 he was first a PoW in US captivity and then was extradited to the Soviet forces where he was held until 1948. After being released he studied law and even obtained a doctorate in law. In the 1960s Hinze was managing director for the board of metal goods producers in Düsseldorf. In 1966 he took over the law firm of a lawyer Wilhelm Kluge in Düsseldorf and specialized in the fields gun ownership, explosives legislation and weapons export regulations. Hinze was co-author of the preeminent legal commentary book on these subjects.

The Hinze books are dry operational histories, VERY dry and lacking in all sorts of details. A bit like Glantz's early work, except from the Axis point of view. I keep them around for reference mainly but unlike Glantz, Hinze's works are mid/late-war. 43-45 so they cover a gap. I think they add value but if your interests are different and specific there are a lot of more interesting books out there.

If you are looking for the polar opposite of Franz Kurowski, Hinze is your guy. His writings essentially describe the movements of units on a map; so lots of dates, places, and unit numbers (all of which I personally find very interesting) but nothing about personalities, weapons, or the horrors of war.
