To understand both ideologies in depth, what books can you recommend?

Thanks.

The following book does not describe the philosophies of Fascism or Marxism but it does provide an overview of what happens to societies that have adopted Marxism.

"The Black Book of Communism, Crimes, Terror, Repression"

Authors: Stephane Courtois, Nicolas Werth, Jean-Louis Panne, Andrzej Paczkowski, Karel Bartosek, Jean-Louis Margolin

The book appeared in 1997 and covers every country that adopted or were forced into Communism.

Another book I recommend is "Marx & Satan" by Richard Wurmbrand. Richard outlines what Marx and his associates believed in and how that belief guided the development of Marxism. Very insightful and helps explain why the systems incorporated into Marxism results in such horrific consequences.

You might also like "The Socialist Phenomenon" by Igor Shafarevich. The author briefly mentions Fascism, or National Socialism, as well (only briefly). Interestingly, it appears that for him, it falls under the wider spectrum of socialist ideologies.

There are significant differences between marxism and its attempted implementations through marxism-leninism. Marxism-leninism, as implemented by the Soviet Union, is essentially authoritarian state capitalism. There has never been any implementation of pure marxism on a state level as described by Marx and Engels (the closest is probably the Israeli kibbutzim). If you want to read about marxism, you must first decide whether you want to study its theory, or its is many ways significantly different implementations by various usually authoritarian leaders.

Likewise, national socialism is not socialism, and while it does have some common aspects with fascism, it isn't that either.

If I may, I encourage those who want to study a particular philosophy or theology to begin by studying the people involved in the creating of or codifying that philosophy. The reason for this is that when you begin studying, and I’ll use Marxism as an example, by reading the Communist Manifesto, you will automatically apply your personal bias toward what is written. When you read a point or position that sounds good to you, than you assume that the writer shares the same beliefs and/or values as you. This is not necessarily true. This bias affects all of us, so to understand Marxism you should first understand Marx.

But it is up to James how he wants to study.

Are there many books that compare the two ideologies?

I've read a couple of books that compare Hitler and Stalin but I'm now more interested in specifically the ideologies of Fascism and Marxism.

One of the most insightful comparisons I read came from a chapter out of Richard Pipe's book on the Russian Revolution.
It's the second volume titled "Russia Under the Bolshevik Regime". It's a popular book so your library might have it.

Hi,

Do you know anywhere that sells Young Mussolini and the Intellectual Origins of Fascism in paperback fairly cheap? A seller on Amazon is currently selling a hardcover version of it for £57.27 which is a bit steep if you ask me.

abebooks.com has plenty of cheaper copies. good source of used books. 2 copies from UK listed are cheapest. I think that book was only published in hardcover format.
