Military PC games / simulation
I was wondering if anyone has experienced any computer software games / simulation of battles that are more educational than entertaining - ones that would help you better understand the battle?
Re: Military PC games / simulation
Not sure if you'd consider this more educational, but here's a shot.
I've been playing a game called "Gary Grigsby's War in the East." It is probably the most complex Eastern front simulation ever created. I like it because it has extremely detailed information on everything from weapons, OOB, TO&E for different units, terrain information, etc. If this game can't be considered educational, then I've no idea what would be.

Free download - and an excellent game, too: https://www.shrapnelgames.com/Camo_Work ... _page.html

Used to enjoy all the Close Combat games. CC2 and CC5 were my favorites.

The Operational Art of War has been around for a while. Its game engine has to cope with a wide variety of scenarios.

A good multi player combat flight simulator is about the only way to understand air to air tactics. I spent/wasted about a decade taking part and helping to run the historic events for iEN's Warbirds. https://corporate-ient.com/games/
I had a look at WW2online https://www.wwiionline.com/ At one point several of us looked at it as an alternative to warbirds. I did not like the game. The air side was OK and I liked the 1940 plane set. However the ground battle lacked realism. OK that's because real ground operations involves a lot of sitting around waiting for something to happen, whereas someone playing a game wants some action, so charge around die respawn -paintball for slobs.

Age of Empires I etc., a chess game with hundreds of pieces on each side.
Re: Military PC games / simulation
Tactical Level:
Total War Series (Napoleon Total War is the best)
Steel Division II
Operational / Strategic:
Strategic Command - WWII War in Europe (Probably good because it has a map, supply lines, etc.)
Hearts of Iron?
I don't know, i think maybe i would need a little more specific information on what you're trying to do/learn/teach.

Ahhhh, the best wargames were the V4V and W@W series by Atomic games. Sadly no one bought the engine and released it again.

The Hearts of Iron series are good. Any game from Paradox is pretty reliable.
Real life events are incorporated into the game at the relevant point in history and you have to choose what to do. For example:
1 September 1939 (playing as Germany)
a.) Proceed with the invasion. Danzig, Poznan and another few provinces become part of the Reich once the territory has been captured.
b.) Back down. This causes all sorts of morale problems and your relations with foreign countries change. Some improve slightly (UK, France, Poland) whilst others deteriorate (USSR)
You also have the option to choose your country's leading politicians and military commanders from a long list. Some have positive characteristics, others have negative.
A worthy addition to any collection and it's not too hard either.
