PANZERKRIEG - Volume 1 - Stalingrad

Post by pim » 01 Dec 2017 01:38

In my opinion the best book for 2017 has arrived! This is the book by Jason D. Mark "Panzerkrieg - Volume 1 - German Armoured Operations at Stalingrad". The detailed research, the outstanding photographic material and the quality of the publication is an example on how it can be done. The book is an absolute must have for those interested in the Eastern Front and armoured warfare.
In the last years I feel we have been going backward in regard to the quality of books published. Too much research is based on secondary sources, increasingly photos now are of a poor print quality, the same tired old photos are churned out, the captions thereof so blatantly wrong, and in more and more cases the editing (proofreading) could have been done better by a 6th grader. Furthermore many publishing houses can never meet their scheduled delivery date. Jason Mark and his publishing house 'Leaping Horseman Books' (he is the author and publisher!!) shows how it can be done. The quality of the end product and the excellent customer service is second to none.

I pre-ordered it and can't wait to get it! I own and have read all of his books! Without a doubt one of the best military writers around!

Is this primarily a history of the three panzer battalions or is it more a history of the divisions AND the panzer battalions attached to them?

I read from review that Volume II will be a history of the 16.Pz at Stalingrad. This was under the command of Hans Hube, who would later rise to the ranks of Hitler's favorite generals and would be later be killed in airplane crash.

It is primarily a history of the three battalions, but with the larger divisions and surrounding units also described and placed in proper context within the entire battle. Excellent book! Very tactical!

Thanks Klaus

So it's 3.ID (mot.), 29.ID (mot.), and 60.ID (mot.)?

how much of the book is about the armored/breakthrough battles outside of Stalingrad as opposed to the fighting for the city proper?

Yes it's those units. I would say a lot of the book probably about 60% or more is about all the battles before reaching Stalingrad...

As I recall, during our latest face to face conversion ,He mentioned that he is still working on Vol 2,and the preparation of another book( it is about Fallschirmjäger unit in Stalingrad Campaign) is also underway.

I got my copy today and the huge photo gallery (and the very precise and well researched captions) alone is excellent and uniquely valuable.
