17. SS “Götz von Berlichingen" series
17. SS “Götz von Berlichingen" series

Has anybody bought and read this series? At 6” x 9”, 587 pages, 80 photos, 34 maps, 27 appendices, it appears to be the most extensive unit history of the unit. I would like to know how much coverage is featured in Volume 1 and how good it is.

Re: 17. SS “Götz von Berlichingen" series
I have the series in German (Munin-Verlag). It is a very good divisional history. Hans Stöber writes well and it is by far the most extensive unit history of the division. As a Munin-Verlag funded and published series it is of course favourable to the W-SS. I won't be buying the JJF published series because I assume it is just basically a translation and I already have it. If you're interested in this division, interested in the W-SS, interested in the battles fought on the Western Front in 1944/45 you'd be crazy not to buy it.

End of September 1944.
Re: 17. SS “Götz von Berlichingen" series
I wanted to also ask: How did V1 improve your understanding of the Battle of the Bocage? /Saint-Lô?
The 17. SS sector and the 3. FJD was the critical areas for the battle, the 17.SS essentially fought itself down to the bone in the defense. The 2. SS V5 history adds to the understanding, although mainly in the form of being a reserve force (broken up into various elements) that screened the frontline of the german 7th Army.

Re: 17. SS “Götz von Berlichingen" series
I bought a copy of the 17.SS history from this online store:
http://www.rzm.com/books/fp/fp102.cfm
They charged me $72 for the book and $6 for shipping- considerably less than the $96 (total) price from the Canadian publisher.
I looked around on the net' and a forum poster commented that this history was written from a set of war diaries that was buried (and not destroyed), hence the length of the history.
