The Forgotten Soldier: fiction or fact?

Hey troops! New member here.
Do you think the book The Forgotten Soldier by Guy Sajer is authentic? The author and the publisher claims it’s non-fiction. Being one of my favorite books and having read it three times it’s my opinion that is mostly the work of the author’s imagination. My main reason is because there is a lot of dialogue in the book and there is no way Sajer could have remembered it all. Although it’s still plausible he served in GD, I realize it’s a possibility that he never was a soldier. Also, after doing some brief internet research I found an article criticizing all the mistakes he makes with regard to uniforms, locations of his unit and equipment. Despite this it’s also possible he wrote the book years later and these mistakes are due to the passing of time. Either way the book still is powerful and entertaining. What are your own thoughts?
