Sonderkommando 1005 - annihilation of sites of extermination

The German historian Andrej Angrick has just published a two volume history of Sonderkommando 1005 and provides new information on the activities of this SS unit. It includes chapters on the development of burning bodies in the concentration and extermination camps, and sites in Russia where mass burials followed mass executions. There is also a chapter on the Katyn massacres (Russian).

It is good on names of those involves, photos of the of the sites and the perpetrators - like my German books the photos are printed among the text rather than as glossy sections.

Andrej Angrick
"Aktion 1005". Spurenbeseitigung von NS-Massenverbrechen 1942-1945.
publ. Wallstein Verlag, 2018 (2 volume set).

Available now on amazon - both hardcover and kindle.

2 volumes! Must be a hell of a book. Alas, only in German. Germans are really putting out some very interesting, specialist titles. Maybe this one will merit an English translation at some point. Hope so. The history of 1005 is pure horror.

Steven,
You mentioned a chapter on Katyn. How does the author weave the Katyn episode into the history of 1005? How are they related? This sounds intriguing. Unless of course the SS were looking at the repercussions of body discovery so that makes sense.

According to the Index under Katyn:
Gerichtsmediziner und Pathologen [The "international" examination of the site)
KGB connection
Kommissionsbericht und Propaganda (refers to first entry)
Lagermannschafts-Reaktionen auf
Leichenverbrennungen (bei Zeichnung)
Massengräber-Fund, Exhumierungen und Propaganda
Opferzahlen
Propaganda zu
all that in around 30 pages of Vol. 1.

Hi!

Can you check what is in the book on Slovenia? The unit was sent to Slovenia in 1945.

Regards,
Klemen

Not so much about "Slowenien" - only 5 pages noted.
For "Gruppe 'Iltis' z.b.V" there are ten pages noted.
