It has mixed reviews on different websites, is it worth buying?

It's an advanced read (with a lot of primary sources and also data on combat units) that in-cooperates previous texts. Really it is best english-language series on the subject. The same author's other text "Panzergrenadiers to the Front" (about PzG BR 1945) is also extremely detailed.

Does it have a generous amount of first hand accounts?

Not really as it's a operational history
