For the record USA magazine "Readers Digest" was a popular little magazine series...mixture of truth and fiction....
Fictional stories:
1] "Address Unknown" plot is a series of letters between a german Jew in US and German gentile in Germany. The Jews sister had a affair with the gentile and fled Germany; foolishly she comes back to Germany and is chased and killed by the NAZI SA. The getile writes of what happened to the brother who in return sends strange crypic letters to the gentile in Germay.....which beings him to the attention to the NAzis...soon the letters are returned to the german Jew in US postmarked "Addressed Unknown". It is impiled that the Gentile is in a KZ Camp. MAde into a play and a movie.
Fact: The author wrote this story..not because any of the characthers were true but because in 1933-1938 Germany some letters critical of the Nazi Regime were sent to American students studying in Germany...who in turn warned the letter writer to stop sending these letters because the mail was censored.
2] P-40 From Minando Story is that before the fall of the Phillippines several US Airmen managed to put toggether a P-40 aircraft so it could conduct a one man "Murphy's war" against the Japanese; trying to reach US base in CHina the plane is accidently shot by US Fighters and Pilot killed.
Fact. It was made up Yarn written by Col Robert L Scott....this legend is still going strong...in latest versian the pilot flies from the Phillippines to Pearl harbor before beign shot down...!
3] Story by John Stinebeck in whcih two German Generals {One Geman Army and the other SS] hear from Hitler that anyone retreating without orders from A.H. with have their family members killed by execution. The German Army deceides to surrender; the SS General panicis and tries to prevent the surrender but is shot and killed by the Army General. The General wife is taken for execution; however she doesnt mind because she is dying from terminal case of cancer......
