diary/memoir - 13th Pz. Div.?

Post by Biber » 10 Sep 2023 21:14

Does anybody know of the existence of any soldier's diary (not KTB) or memoire associated with the 13th Panzer Division during the early days of Barbarossa?

Devil on my Shoulder - read it about 40 years ago but I think his service, until capture, was in the time frame you nominate. I have a brief review on my German Memoirs thread.

A better comrade you will never find_ Schiebel

The author was in Kradschützen-Bataillon 43, 13. Panzer-Division during Barbarossa, later in was posted to s. Panzerjaeger Abteilung 88, but the first 40 pages cover the 1941 period.

Do you have the book? I have seen the table of contents and what I am interested in would be, if it is mentioned at all , within the first couple dozen or so pages. I am interested in any accounts from around the 1-2 of July 1941, concerning the crossing of the Horyn River, and anything mentioning the villages of Symoniv, Krosnowka, Franivka and Hoszcza (Gosht).

I have a few questions about this book:
Can you still remember when the author was captured? Did he fought in Hungary? In addition, I also saw some websites claim that the author is from the 12th Panzer Division

Sorry, I've only just seen this. Look, it was a long time ago that I read it, probably 1980. I remember it as the 13th Panzer but I could be wrong. I think he was captured before the retreat through Hungary but again, I'm not sure. I seem to remember he was caught hiding on a train. I'm sure it was before the end of the war though. He wrote that he was recognised by a Hiwi he'd befriended and this saved him from likely execution. The bulk of the story is about his POW time in the mines. I seem to remember he did write about placenames when he could.

Thank you very much for the information, nothing to be sorry about
Looks interesting, I will buy it soon
