Munich 1933-45

Post by trespasser07 » 20 Sep 2023 11:54

Hi

Is there any reading members can recommend on Munich pre war and during 1939-45? General information about the city and population and also anything about the Gauleiter Giesler and Eberstein etc?

Thanks

Best book I ever read on the subject was by David Clay Large,
“Where Ghosts Walked: Munich’s road to the Third Reich”. Well written, holds interest, a page turner. It does cover a lot of ground and includes pre-WWI through the 20’s and 30’s and to the end of the TR. Giesler is covered but nothing on Eberstein.
There is also David Ian Hall’s book “Hitler’s Munich: Capital of the Nazi Movement” which details the same period.

Also try the catalogue for the NS-Dokumentation Center in Munich, https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/3406677894? ... ectObb=new (contents list here: https://d-nb.info/106336678x/04 ). It's more than just a catalogue, but it's not an easy read like Clay Large - more of an academic study. It's also a huge, very heavy book.

Thank you Richard for bringing this book to our attention. I went ahead and ordered myself a copy as the essay topics piqued my interest.

I received the book that Richard mentioned and can attest that it is a very heavy, big tome. The “catologue” part is about 1/2 the book and consists of all the photos and accompanying texts from the displays that visitors to the museum would see as they stroll the exhibit. The 2nd half are the essays. The only drawback is that some photos are small, however that can’t be helped in a book of this size. Pictures of both NS personalities and dissidents against the regime , color photos of various Nazi and antisemitic publications of the time period, posters, propaganda material, art, Putsch, kitsch, regimes (both Soviet Republic and NS), revolts and right-wing counter-revolution. I spent about an hour viewing the photos but there is much text even in that section. Im glad I bought the book.
