Re: Books published by members
My new book is out:
Parleying with the Devil: Prisoner Exchange in Yugoslavia, 1941‒1945
Forword by Klaus Schmider
Publisher: University Press of Kentucky/Andarta Books
456 pages, 10 tables
Year:2020
The Second World War in Yugoslavia is notorious for the brutal struggle between the armed forces of the Third Reich and the communist-led Partisans. Less known is the fact that the two sides negotiated prisoner exchanges throughout the war. Under extraordinary circumstances, these early communications evolved into a formal exchange agreement centered on the creation of a neutral zone -- quite possibly the only such area in occupied Europe -- where prisoners were regularly exchanged until late April 1945, saving thousands of lives. The leadership on both sides used these points of contact to hold secret political talks, for which they were nearly branded as traitors by their superiors in Berlin and Moscow. Parleying with the Devil is the first comprehensive analysis of prisoner exchanges and the attendant contacts between the German occupation authorities and the Yugoslav Partisans. The book argues that prisoner exchange had a decisive influence on prisoner of war policies on both sides and helped reduce the levels of violence for which this theater of war became infamous. Parleying with the Devil reveals that these points of contact, contrary to some claims, did not lead to collusion between these two parties against other Yugoslav factions or the Western Allies.
"Deftly detailing the motives and actions of Tito's Partisan movement and the German occupiers within the larger context of the war, Trifković provides a masterful analysis of a neglected and complex topic. A trailblazing work that modifies our traditional understanding of the brutal war waged within Yugoslavia's borders." -- Jeff Rutherford, author of Combat and Genocide on the Eastern Front: The German Infantry's War, 1941--1944
"Trifković's Parleying with the Devil is a unique and monumental contribution to the literature on prisoners of war in the Second World War. It is exhaustively researched from sources in multiple languages, offering the only comprehensive treatment of the topic. This should be the standard work on the subject for the foreseeable future." -- Derek R. Mallett, author of Hitler's Generals in America: Nazi POWs and Allied Military Intelligence

Available now at the usual establishments.
Translated Gayer’s “Die Deutschen U-Boote in ihrer Kriegführung 1914-1918” originally encompassing four volumes narrating submarine operations to include individual patrols and summaries, technology improvements, tactics and frontline personnel views of strategies developed at the most senior military and political level. The back and forth decisions regarding using submarines to stalk warships or merchant ships are described. The work is particularly useful for presenting the views of front line flotilla commanders who are able to analyze their boat commanders’ experiences.
It is very much a one volume, lightened version of the official history by Spindler which appeared years afterwards. Have added footnote corrections and maps particularly of submarine planted minefields. A very interesting work and solid English language version until the official history is translated. Priced quite reasonably. The original volumes are beacoup [insert your currency].
Hope you enjoy. Please PM any critique's after purchasing.
Please note the author intended to create 5 to 6 volumes and did not publish events beyond February 1917. He did present a paper on 1917-1918 events and I added an afterword summarizing his points using data from his paper.

Translated the memoirs of Otto Hersing, celebrated German submarine commander of the First World War. He is known for launching the first armed torpedo strike in history, sinking a British cruiser and for sinking two British pre-dreadnoughts off Gallipoli, providing considerable moral support to the Turks there. It is a brief memoir as he touches on the salient points of his experiences during the war including the revolution in 1918.

I first met our very own AHF member Geoff Walden back in 2002 and then again a few years later. A fantastic all-round guy with an infectious enthusiasm for WW2 and Third Reich history.
His book on Berchtesgaden and the Obersalzberg area is highly recommended and hopefully other books will follow.

Hey guys,
partly in thanks to the help I have received here I have now published my translations into English of my great-grandfather's memoirs. My great-grandfather was an Austrian who served with the Gebirgsjäger in Norway and the Soviet Union and as per the sticky guidelines I have posted a full thread concerning the details here including links to the books on amazon.

Is this the 1914 battle (BEF vs. Germans) or the end of August 1944 encirclement of 25 000 Germans by Bradley?monk2002uk wrote: ↑24 Feb 2021, 10:53"The Battle of Mons: The Official German History", translated from the original 'Die Schlacht bei Mons' by Robert Dunlop and Holger Puttkammer.
