There aren't too many people whose works I'd recommend without reading them first, but Mr G. Trifkovic is one of them ;) Most heartfelt congratulations on the new book! (Which I did have the pleasure to already start reading and it did meet - and exceed my high expectations.)

What I particularly like about Gaius' writings is that even if one's familiar with the subject he's covering, they will still learn something new and enjoy reading everything, since he approaches history with passion, patience, thoroughness and class. And those unfamiliar with the subject will be meticulously guided into it, eventually learning everything they needed to know and much, much more.

I've also seen that another book from my field of interest was released last year by Mr K. Kocjancic, another dear and highly-regarded fellow forum member, whom I also cheerfully congratulate on this occasion.

Sorry I'm late with my endorsements, guys, I keep forgetting to visit this forum section

Dear Ivan,

first of all, many thanks you for your kind words; as for Kocjo's book, I had the pleasure of reading it and can only recommend it.

Best regards,

Available as of now from my website: https://knittelbooks.com/sgk/

In November 1984, a 60-year-old war veteran from Gariboldi, Oregon, wrote a letter to the mayor of Stavelot. In the Second World War, Frank Warnock had been a 1st Lieutenant in the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th US Infantry Division. On the 22nd of December 1944 he had discovered the remains of twenty-three murdered civilians in the garden of the Legaye-Crismer house in Stavelot. He shared some of his recollections and this resulted in an extensive exchange of letters between him and local historians. In one of these letters Warnock reflected on what he had written to them:

“Is there anything in these pages to suggest that haughty, arrogant bestiality is exclusive to the Hitlerite German? Certainly not. It was there long before Hitler and will remain among all races, cultures, colors, religions for a hundred or thousand generations to come. Until sanity comes to the human race. All groups on each of the continents have committed horrors on others or to each other. We have all tried to sweep our own horrors under the rug, but if we dare to peek a little, there they are. Staring back at us. All of us.”

After I had written and published my Gustav Knittel biography, a feeling remained that the victims of the 'Schnelle Gruppe' had been neglected. I had named them and had described their fate, to the best of my ability with the available sources, but they were still people who only came into view when they were murdered. They had no face, no life, no history before that horrid day in December 1944. I had to try to rectify this and, in fact, the same was true for the perpetrators. I mentioned them in Knittel's life story, but the lower ranks in particular remained one-dimensional perpetrators. The seed for this new book had been sown.

All the veterans who helped me with my first book have passed away but I could go back to their children, back to the archives, the written memories, fellow researchers and, above all, back to Stavelot. The judicial documents had been embargoed for decades, but now the Belgian archives finally begun to reveal their secrets. And with the help of tireless 'Sherlock' Vincianne Boulanger, the new research gained momentum. She interviewed the last living eyewitnesses and their relatives told her about the victims. This includes her own father, Yvon Boulanger, whose grandmother, aunt and cousins were murdered by the SS.

While I finalised the manuscript for this book about a massacre that took place seventy-eight years ago, there is war in Ukraine and reports of new outrages echoe what happened in Stavelot all those years ago. Sadly, we have to conclude that Frank Warnock was right.

4 of my great-grandparents lived in Belgium during WW2. They lived in the coastal towns of Blankenberge and Knokke. When the pandemic started, my grandfather showed my brother and I a whole bunch of letters and documents from our ancestors.

My great-grandfather documented all of the adventures he went through during the war. We worked with our grandfather to write a historical fiction book about it. It was a great way to learn more about our ancestors and spend time over Zoom with our grandfather even though we couldn't visit him.

If you'd like to read our book, it's available on Amazon and at other bookstores. It's called "Running from the Gestapo". The ISBN is 978-1-4116-1286-0.

Here are a few links: The cover of the book includes pictures of some of the "papers" they had to carry around during the war.

Hi!

My new book on German winter and spring operations in Yugoslavia is out:

Kesselschlachten in Jugoslawien: Unternehmen "Weiss" und "Schwarz" 1943

“[...] The hour of the complete annihilation of Tito's army has come. The order is: 'No able-bodied man leaves the cauldron alive'" (Commander of the German troops in Croatia to subordinate units, June 10, 1943)

In early January 1943, Axis forces in the Balkans launched a series of ambitious operations. Their goal was to smash the bulk of the Yugoslav People's Liberation Army and to secure the strategically important hinterland of the Adriatic coast. These operations, dubbed "Weiss" and "Schwarz", were among the largest of their kind. The Wehrmacht alone deployed between 40,000 and 60,000 of its soldiers and up to 100 aircraft, thus overshadowing even the otherwise massive "anti-bandit operations" in the USSR . It remains to be seen whether the sheer superiority in men and materiel would enable the Germans to force their agile enemy into a Moltke-style encirclement battle and thus quash the entire communist-led uprising virtually in one afternoon.

Decades of reading finally paid off when I was asked to write this book. Even then a lot of intensive reading was involved to research World War II Snipers: The Men, Their Guns, Their Story. It was originally envisioned as the normal wall of text with a few photos but Casemate gutted one entire chapter and used it for text boxes which are scattered throughout the book. Over 400 photos, 12 pages of index and 12 pages of bibliography (both triple column) and over 190k words (when submitted) to tell how snipers were selected, trained, and their combat experience in Western Europe, Eastern Europe and the Far East/Pacific threatres of the war. The final chapter covers the firearms and equipment (did you know that besides the Germans and Americans, that the British and the Soviets also had infrared viewing devices?) used by the snipers.

Additionally, it would have been a pity to allow the research material to go to waste so this little book was put together. It has the 1933 Soviet Sniper Training Manual which has never been seen before in english reprinted in its entirety as well as a chapter on the various equipment (scopes or what not) used by the WW II sniper: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/world- ... 0982481318
