Does anyone know of a good book about Germany in 1933, the first year of the third reich. I've been intrested in how non-Nazi parties, unions, and other organization reacted to the new government, in the few months that they had to live as legal organizations.

You might try William Sheridan Allen, "The Nazi Seizure of Power: The Experience of a Single German Town 1930-1935," Quadrangle Books (paperback) 1965. It explores in minute detail the dramatic rise of Nazism through the microcosm of a single small (c. 10,000 inhabitants) town, of which there were close to 1,000 in Germany and in which lived about 1 out of every 7 Germans. I personally found it highly interesting.

Rob, you might also try Eliot Barculo Wheaton's "The Nazi Revolution 1933-1935: Prelude to Calamity", Doubleday & Company, 1968 (paperback edition published by Anchor Books, 1969). I read it some 30 years ago with great interest and then forgot about it until I came across it in my library today. As I recall, it is quite well written, highly detailed and apparently well researched, with extensive notes and bibliography (although by now somewhat dated.)

Regards, Kaschner
