KUROWSKI, Sturmgeschütze - Sturmartillerie

#1

Post by lutrebois » 21 Apr 2006, 21:01

I collect books in German about each branch of the German "Heer".
I do have a problem with some books on Sturmartillerie by KUROWSKI. (Until now I do not own one of the books mentionned below)

In 1965 he wrote (with TORNAU) : " Sturmartillerie, Fels in der Brandung", printed by Maximilian Verlag, 323 pages

In 1977 he wrote (with TORNAU): "Sturmartillerie 1939-45, die dramatische Geschichte einer Waffengattung" printed by
MOTORBUCH, 352 pages.

What is the difference between those books ?
I'm NOT interested in "pictures-books" but in the facts (gliederung, type of StuGesch ..) about StuGesch Bde, Abt and Coy's.

Sturmgeschütze Vor !!! in English, I presume, is the translation of one of the two German books? Which one ?

Who can help me out ?
Thx

See the discussion in this thread.

Kurowski is an author who in general has a bad reputation for glorifying the German army in his written works. His "Aces" books reads very much like storybooks, as a prime example. But on the other hand he has written a few books which are actually fairly well done, and "Sturmgeschütze Vor" is one of them. As long as one takes some of the more fantastical accounts with a grain of salt, the fact remains that this particular book is by far the best overview of the Heer StuG units in English. It's got plenty of useful information on combat histories, commanders, award recipients, unit insignia, etc. It's even got some decent photo sections. Unless you can read German or French, I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in Germany's StuG force.

The book's only major flaw, in my opinion, is i's lack of coverage of SS StuG units. But given the wealth of material written about the WSS, it's a gap that can easily be filled with other literature.

Thank you for the feedback. I'm researching the not-well-covered unit Stug.Brig.902, which was in the role of "Stug.Lehr-Abt. West" at the time of the Normandy invasion.

Well, now a I can partially answer this question myself. 2 out of 3 so far.

1) Sturmgeschutz Vor!, published 1999. I have this book now and was disappointed to find my primary unit of interest, the 902 is not covered in narrative. :-( It looks like a decent reference for many other units though. As a teaser though, it has a photo of 3 officers around their Stug, of the Sturmartillerie-Lehr-Brigade 902, at Camp du Ruchard in April 1944. Frustrating that he had a photo from the unit but still did not write about it.
In it I don't see any description of the references for his work.

2) Sturmartillerie 1939-1945, published, 1978. I've just received it. It has more detail. I have not found anything on the 902 so far but it has good coverage of several other Heeres-Sturmartillerie sister units originating from the Stug-Lehr-Abt West: particularly the 341 and 394 which fought in Normandy.
The English book is not a translation of the German. It is organized differently and the German has more content.

I don't see in either book, clear references for his work. I suppose he moved a cot into BAMA and WAST Dienstelle decades ago and spent months to years to put this material together. He was also doing this work at a time when he could get input from veterans.

So, I am curious whether his earlier book Sturmartillerie, Fels in der Brandung, published 1966, will maybe have a tidbit about the 902.

I'd suspect not, but it's always worth a try I guess?

As for the lack of citations... It's not something that Kurowski exactly stands out for. However a lot of similar works written at the same time are like that as well. They're not exactly written for a scholarly audience, after all, and given the fragmentary nature of the evidence I can at least understand why it doesn't have all the citations we would like. Oh well.

I am amazed anyone can take a hack like Kurowski seriously. The man has produced about a book a week for over 40 years and has a legion of pseudonyms like Heinrich Schulze-Acting Chief,/Franz K. Kaufmann/ Johanna Schulz/ Heinrich H. Bernig/ Karl Alman/ Gloria Mellina/ Jason Meeker /Volkmar Kühn/ Rüdiger gripping.
He is a well known revisionist and Nazi apologists.
I can state as a fact that his Normandy works are outright fabrication. The man has zero credibility.

Thank you for the words of warning. My goal with the Tornau and Kurowski books is to find clues to the movements of some Stug units. I am reluctant to use any post-war author’s work as the source. Trying to use the clues and then trace back to actual German, or Allied records or interviews. So if I get some good tips among his questionable work, I plan to try to Corroborate it.

He is a well known revisionist and Nazi apologists.
I can state as a fact that his Normandy works are outright fabrication. The man has zero credibility.

Yes, he is a pretty unreliable author in general. But it would be fallacious to conclude that on account of that all his material is garbage, as some of it is decent enough. And you won't find that view just from me either. From what I've gathered from other threads on this forum a handful of books he produced that are worth the read include.

1) Sturmgeschütze Vor (though apparently Tornau did most of the work)
2) Festung Holland
3) Fränkische Infanterie
4) Fallschirmpanzerkorps HG (I can attest to that one)

My verdict is that books should be judged on their own merits or lack thereof, and as the saying goes even a broken clock is correct two times a day.

Here's a video of Kurowski being grilled by a Dutch journalist:

There are a couple of pages about Stug.Brig.902 in Didier Laugier, "Sturmartillerie I", Editions Heimdal, pages 337 - 340

Laugier's two-volume set is probably the best overview of the various Sturmgeschütz units at the moment.

'I'm a war historian and an author recognised throughout the world but you can't do this to me'. sums him up. A typical Nazi apologist and 'THE' source of most of the overblown claims for German tank aces in WW2. His books have corrupted a generation who still cling to his fabricated claims. Kurowski is a complete and utter fraud.

Would you like to revisit your opinion of the HG book in light of the You Tube clip?

You don't need to tell me about how many of these divisional histories gloss over or explain away the war crimes perpetrated by the units they are writing about. That's something that always need to be taken into account when reading such books. That does not, however, discredit the quality of this kind of literature with regards to the other aspects of a unit's history that such books write about.
