You are right. The difference is the age.

I wasn't sure, so I asked a friend of mine. He told me, the picture of
2012 is the first version from 1937/38. It had a larger "battery box"
underneath than the "war-version" (you can see the power cable
from the upper part to the "battery box"). This old version had also
a antenna, which was not foldable.

On the newer picture you posted you can see the foldable antenna.
This version of the antenna was build after 1938. The "battery box"
seems to be on the ground, because the power cable is going to the
ground behind the stand.

That is almost certainly a surveyor's transit, most likely a commercial civilian model. Which model? My bet would be a Keuffel and Esser, but what model I'm not sure on.

Thanks, Gardner. What is a surveyor's transit ?? is the same than a theodolite ? I have no idea about these instruments.... :roll:

This is a typical one from the period. This is more of a builder's transit, but they work the same way.



The device is leveled using the bubble levels on it so it traverses in a 360 degree level plane. You have a second person at a known distance with a height pole to give readings. There is a compass table on the base of the instrument to give the direction you are looking from your baseline. These translate into readings that can be plotted to give the contours of the land for grading, building roads, leveling a lot for a building, etc. Engineers and construction workers use them.
I own one like this one.



That's what I use it for, grading a lot or laying out building lines.

The difference between the Builder's and Surveryor's is the latter has elevation included where as the former is fixed level.

Theodolites and such are just more accurate versions of these. The one in the picture is definitely a surveyor's transit by the look of it and that it's elevated. K and E was a big purveyor of these back then. The US was a leader in civil engineering. That's why I figured it probably was that brand, but it could easily be a different brand. All I can suggest is looking at pictures of antique ones for sale and trying to find one that looks close to the picture.

This sort might be used by artillery batteries as well to determine their positon accurately for map coordinates so their fire is accurate.

I suspect, given the guys in the pictures are US Navy, that that is a servo or syncro motor for something.

But why the openings. Maybe some kind of barometric mechanism?

The openings are probably for cooling and or hook up of power / input and output leads.
