GERMAN EQUIPMANT IDENTIFICATION

#1

Post by mngray » 06 Dec 2002, 07:01

I am trying to identify the vehicles shown in these pictures - can anybody help?

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/mngray/index.htm

Picture 1: An aircraft crashed on the beach. What type of aircraft?
Picture 2: A destroyed armoured vehicle (Spitfire in background)?
Picture 3: A destroyed tank.
Picture 4: A destroyed armoured vehicles of some sort.
Picture 5: Another destroyed armoured vehicle.

All photos dated Sep 1943 if that helps.

Grateful for any assistance.

Photo 1 is an Messerschmidt 109, not much left to be more specific.
Photo 2 & 3 are Panzer IV's which both appear to have had extra skirts fitted.

Photo 5 would appear to be an Sdkfz7 Half track - going by the wheels.

I agree with Simon on photos 1 and 5. Three looks kind of like a mark IV, but the gun mount looks almost like a jadgpanzer IV. Pic two looks almost like a Crusader from its turret shape(widest at the center), which would explain the spitfire in the background. Also, the number on pics 2 and 3 show that they are in the same set (same handwriting, 1 number difference.) Pic 4 appears to have a 81mm german mortar and there is german writing on it. Thats all i got.

The original captions from the photographs (from the Salerno Landings at the US National Archives) if this sheds any light on the matter, are as follows:
Picture 1: "Wrecked German plane destroyed by ack-ack, 9 September 1943."
Picture 2: "Spitfire lands on a new airfield 20 miles south of Salerno, Italy. 10 September 1943."
Picture 3: "German tank (foreground) and burning plane (background) as US reinforcements advance. 10 September 1943."
Picture 4: "American soldiers look over a German prime mover which was demolished at Avellino. 2 October 1943."
Picture 5: "Destroyed German halftrack and blown up railway bridge outside Eboli. 17 October 1943."
