German Ammo Boxes

#1

Post by Brig » 13 Jan 2003, 02:47

I was wondering if anyone could tell me anything about the metal German ammo boxes. Any pictures, perhaps? The types that would hold the chains of 8mm for belt-fed machine guns. Gray, black? What did they say? What color lettering? Etc, etc.

I bought a cheap US ammo box and I'm trying to convert it into a nice German one/similar for a machine gun nest display I'm putting together

Hi
First i can't claim to have seen Hundreds & Hundreds of these ammo boxes, although i have seen possibly 40 to 50 on ebay & such...I also own 2, one in Original Dark Green & the other was overpainted an olive green colour as the original tan colour was 95% missing...i have since restored it to a Dark green to match the other ammo can.....
none i have seen have had any Text on them....
bare in mind also that the MG crews also used atleast 1 ammo box for the MG spare parts & there are a lot!
as shown in the image i also own the oil/petroleum (shaped so 2 cans fit in 1 ammo box) can for cleaning....also told by a vet that 1 small oil can sometimes contained Glycerine for lubricating the MG for winter protection.
hope this helps
