And You are right, it is a rangefinder (telemeter) 300cm Barr & Stroud of the Swiss Army. Here two more pics of this rangefinder (source of the pic: http://www.loutan.net/olivier/archives/ ... ee-suisse/ ). At the end of the war the Swiss Army had 114 of these rangefinders.

It is strange the mix of equipments of different origins in the same anti-aircraft system. Normally all the elements of the fire control system of a AA battery had the same origin...

Woah ! Definetly a masterpiece !

Naval for sure. Rangefinders were way less accurante that the triangular method used by coastal batteries. Of course a ship can not use the triangular method and had to have the very bigger (big >>>accurate) possible rangefinder. Some german batteries had large rangefinder but they were from KM design (Heer batteries only had poor equipment).

I've been looking at photos and I think you're right. I would say that the photo is taken from the searchlight platforms located around the chimney
More specifically I would say that it is the same Deutschland, since you cannot see the catapult that his two brothers had aft of the smokestack...

About the rangefinder, I suppoose it is a Zeiss product, is it not ?

XVIII. Photographic work.

The photographic works include:
photographic,
long-distance photography,
photogranimetric and stereophotogrammetric recordings and their further elaboration or utilization.
This work is carried out by photographic and photogrammetric specialists.

They are primarily used for war surveying, then for land surveying tasks, and finally for work on war history and for object lessons. For this purpose, the formations of the war mappings are provided with photographer equipment. For combat purposes (especially for artillery), photographic or stereophotogrammetric panoramic photos (Rundbild) are used.

They are usually taken from observer stations or other viewpoints in order to always show the commanders the area viewed by the observer, to enable new observers to get their bearings more quickly and to facilitate the reporting service and the transmission of orders.

The following devices are used for panoramic photos:
Overview sets of 60, 70, 80 cm, then remote sets with 3 m and 4 m focal length, all with, angle measuring device and image marks. Single pictures with ordinary or remote devices (Fernkamera??) are produced of important objects or for purposes of war history as well as occasionally for land survey work for the purpose of describing the country, and finally for teaching purposes.

It seems designated Zeiss Auswanderungmesser AM17 according to the Russian forum where I found the image...

I suppose a early type of Flak fire director, precursor of the Kdo.Ger.35, maybe....

Auswanderungmesser (Am) was a relatively simple device calculating corrections for aiming in direct fire - something like the later Kommandorechner. I'm aware of two models - Am Peres of 1915 and Am Schoenian of 1916, the latter was apparently not made in series.
Kdo.Ger. and Kdo.Hi.Ger. calculated azimuth, elevation and fuze setting for indirect fire.
