Gas mask question

#1

Post by Hempy05 » 09 Aug 2016, 21:50

Hey I have a German gas mask with a label in the lid. I was wondering if anyone could give me information about the owner or what the schtz means.

The label says: Schtz.Loyal Franz
. 1211/4

Sch. = Schütze -> rfileman, the lowest rank in the army.
"Loyal" is likely a misreading of yours. There is no such (first, last) name in German.
The number could be anything, a date, FP number, EKM number etc.

I suggest you post a photo of the name and number.

I'm unable to post a picture at the moment, phone wont let me and I'm away from the laptop-holiday in Normandy and such.

Anyway the label does say loyal, so could this mean he wasn't German, or was half german, resulting in his non-german last/first name ?

Anything will remain pure speculation, until you show what you are talking about.

I did a little searching on the Volksbund.de site and found there are several entries for deceased soldiers with the surname "Loyal"," which I'd never heard of before. Most seem to be from the Danzig area. However, there is no entry for Franz Loyal, so it appears he may have survived the war.
