DRB Class 50 and 52 steam trains

Post by paul.i.w » 21 Oct 2022 00:03

Does anyone know of any books or other sources on these classes of steam trains in German service use in WW2?

Thanks
Paul

1) The book series ‘Locomotives In Profile’ featured the Type 52 and, I believe, the Type 50 locomotives, including the Type 52 condenser version.

This book series was published in the 1980s as a soft cover book of around 40 pages with many photos and color drawing. I believe the book author is Brian Reed.

The book describes these locomotives and only briefly discusses their wartime service. A good portion of the book discusses which European railways operated the Type 52 locomotives postwar. I would recommend it as the first book for you.

This book also formed part of a 2-volume, hard cover bound versions of the Locomotives In Profile series.

Each bound volume contains the profiles of several other steam locomotive types including the Type 52, but I do not recall if the Type 52s are in volume #1 or #2.

2) There are several books written in German for these locomotives. I have not found an English translated version of any of these books to date.

3) Another English language book of the Type 52 locomotives was published about 10 - 15 years ago and was available from Camden Publishing in England.

However this book contains only about 20 pages of text and about 40 pages of the locomotive builders numbers and European railways on which they operated. I bought this book and consider it to be basically worthless.

I hope this information will aid you with your search.

Thanks for the information, Richard. I'll have a look for the profile. If you do know of anything in German, I'd be keen to have a look. My German is basic, but with the help of Google Translate I can get by!

Were any DRB 50/52 retrofitted into armored trains?

I have not seen any photos or documents that show any of the different 2-10-0 class Kriegslokomotives to have been armored for use on one of the Wehrmacht armored trains or track protection trains that operated on the Eastern Front.

I consider it likely that at least one of these locomotives was used on an armored train or track protection train as a replacement standard locomotive for one of the special armored locomotives but cannot provide any evidence of it at this time.

Also, I’ve also not seen any photographic evidence that one of these locomotives was armed with automatic weapons installed on its tender to defend against strafing aircraft, although some modelers have built this version.

The attached photo shows a standard Type 52 locomotive at the Kiev railway yard on the Eastern Front during a winter snowstorm. The photo, which was copied from the internet, is dated 1943 and locomotive may be one of the first ones built.

My second attachment is the German book about the Type 52 Kriegslokomotives that I found useful. You can locate it on the German language version of Ebay or through a German book seller.

My third attachment is the English language book that I recommend against using because, while it does provide some useful technical information and history, the remaining 50% of the book is a list (roster) of which locomotives were built by each of the different builders.

However other reviewers considered this book to be useful and to have worthwhile information. See if you can look through a copy first before you buy it.
