ID an "H 1939" heavy Dominit Lantern/Lamp?

Post by MikeS0000 » 27 Oct 2023 01:57

Hi Folks -

Haven't been very active lately, lots of reasons but mostly health related. However! We visited friends on Northern NY (near Canada) and I found this really heavy, well-built lamp or lantern. Couldn't resist for $25 smackers.

It is a battery operated lantern with a military type paint. German mfg., by DOMINIT. I have found a lot of pictures of WW2 lanterns, but none like this one. Longshot, but maybe the "H" is for HEER? Or, maybe the "H 1939" is an Company ID and nothing more than a construction light.

Any questions, I would be glad to answer. Any ideas or ID much appreciated.

Thanks for looking!

Couple pics of the battery... Seems to have a 3 letter code of "ezy" which I have not been able to find, and "H 1941".

Hello Waleed - !

Thank you very much for the reference.

It is the very same lantern with a couple differences. The one I have is missing or never had the guard over the face The one in the auction does not have the holder on the left side and does not show any sign of having had one. It looks like it held a manual or directions.

One person thought it is a miner's lamp. I think it may also have been a vehicle lamp because of the heavy construction and the auction has it listed a a Heer/Army lamp. It is fun just trying to research it. :)

Thanks again!

Hello Mike
Your lamp somehow intrigued me so I had to go searching some more. And I think I found answers to your questions.
The lamps shown (not Dominit but similar to yours) on the link below both have “H + year” stamped so I believe your H1939 simply means made (Hergestellt) in 1939. The shown versions don’t have a year plaque but are simply stamped with the “H” on one side of the manufacturer logo and production year on the other side (1938 and 1942).
So conclusion must be the design is earlier than WW2 :)

The lamps are mentioned as “Explosionssichere handleuchte mit NC-sammler”. Anyway here’s the link to new pictures and a link to a 1942 copy of a luftwaffe “Die Sammler” manual. The illustration shown on first link + additional info is mentioned on page 76.

Hi Waleed!

Thank you very much for the great references. They are already bookmarked. :-) Interesting that the one lamp has a partial(?) waffenamp. I cannot find one on the lamp I found. Perhaps it is under some of the rust, or just does not have one.

I have to wonder if it would ever work again. :-) But probably will stay 'as is' other than to clean the corrosion off.

Many thanks again and please let me know if I can ever assist with anything on this side of the pond!
