I'm happy to say that Christian Ankerstjerne (Ferdinand Porsche) has accepted my offer to come on board as host of the Equipment section.

*steps on to the podium*

'Erm...' *caugh* 'thank you, thank you very much - I... I don't know what to say... I...'

*steps down from the podium, to overwhelmed with emotions*

;)

Seriously, though - thank you Marcus!

Christian

Well, I aksed Marcus to change to my real name, to avoid some o fthe trouble we've seen about user names before.

Anyway, I think most people mispronouce Porsche anyway, especially in English-speaking countries (it's Por-sche, not Porsje) :P

Podium

I trust the podium in question was the step in the frontal armour of a Tiger? I've seen pictures of someone (Von Manstein?) addressing troops from there - he even had a little staircase up to it.

Maybe it was designed for that purpose - seems like the only reason to put a great big dent in an otherwise great glacis plate...

I'm not quite sure which 'dent' you're referring too - but I guess it's ether the MG mount, or the headlight mount...

Dings and dents

Apologies for my inappropriate use of the word 'dent' and any confusion so caused.
I'm not refering to any aperture in the armour, but to the shape of the glacis plate in general; the way the Tiger's upper frontal armour was not one sloped slab like that of the Panther, but two, the lower of which is not to far from the horizontal to be stood upon.

?!? - the frontal armour of the Tiger II IS one plate... - well, 2 plates, one that's the bottom and one that's the top, but aside from that...

Tiger

Yes, the Tiger II and the Panther were that way, but the Tiger (like the IV) were not. I didn't say Tiger II.
Apologies, it seems my suggestion caused more hassle than it was worth.

Oh, okay - now I get it - sorry for misreading your post! ;)

You are right about the armour of the Tiger, but then again - the Germans didn't think of sloped armour until 1937...
