Feldpostnr list

#1

Post by Marcus » 07 Apr 2002, 19:04

One thing I have been thinking about adding to the site is a Feldpostnr list. To add a (more or less) complete list would be a huge undertaking, however adding a page to the site with a few fpnr and then we can all help out by providing more numbers as we come across them in books, original documents etc.

I think a feldpostnr list would become very useful tool for researchers and by starting small the project can be launched very soon instead of having to wait ages for all the info to be added first.

I've made a page on the site you everyone can get an idea what I have in mind and I hope many of you will be interested in helping out by letting me know additional feldpostnumbers.

I'm all for it.

Feldpostnummern

#9

Post by Christoph Awender » 07 Apr 2002, 23:15

Hello Marcus!

I also thought about it some months ago to bring a list online. Due to many reasons I decided not to do it. I honestly think that the effort you do right know is a drop on the hot stone as we say in austria as you know that there were ten-thousands of Feldpostnummern.

I would have a suggestion for you. I have access to the Kannapin books and other books with Navy Feldpostnummern. I provide the data (I would suggest in access-database format) and you put the info online. I would say that I need a few weeks and several night-duties to do the typing for all numbers.

Your job would be to provide the space:-) and make your mind about a searchable format of representation.

What do you think of it?

regards,
Christoph

Christoph,

Yes, I'm well aware of the number of Feldpost numbers, but I decided to start with this route as after all a little is better than nothing ;-)

However, if you are willing to provide all that information, then I'm of course more than willing to post it on the site!

Christoph,

Access is fine, I'll just install it on my computer then I'm ready for the first load of info!

An almost complete overview of German Feldpost# up to 1945 can be found in:

Tessin, Georg: Verbände und Truppen der Deutschen Wehrmacht und Waffen-SS im Zweiten Weltkrieg 1939-1945. 16 Volumes, Osnabrück 1979ff.

no typo: sixteen volumes!!!

also good sources are:

Kannapin, Norbert: Die Deutsche Feldpost 1939-1945. Organisation und Lokalisation der Feldpostämter und Feldpostdienststellen. 2. Auflage. Osnabrück 1987

Kannapin, Norbert: Die Deutsche Feldpostübersicht, Vol. I-III, Osnabrück 1980

And if Christoph really plans to type 'em all into an MS-Access database:

My salute and all my respect to handle this huuuuge workload!

Feldpostnummern

I am aware that it will be a awfull lot of work but it shortens the time between alarms during the night. I also once typed about 16 000 units from Keilig tables into access format in a few weeks... :-) just to have a good searchable database of units and their subordination.

AND I think it will be of great help to people not having access to these books.

cheers
Christoph

It always seems to be very popular with many people on Feldgrau so its logical to make a one stop resource for it.
